to better reflect the guideline WP:NOTBROKEN, which says that redirects generally should not be bypassed in links. There are some exceptions in the guideline, but none have to do with the page being updated for another reason. Thank you. —Mx. Granger (talk · contribs) 22:25, 4 August 2024 (UTC)

Mixed language and languages without codes
[edit]When going through Category:Redirects from undetermined-language terms I found redirects like Alpenrhein River which have mixed multiple languages (Alpenrhein German, River English) and redirects like Kallsruh, this case it's South Franconian for Karlsruhe and has no ISO language code.
There should be an option to specify an array of language codes and have a fallback for uncoded languages instead of using undetermined for languages without codes. Maybe the first more necessary than the latter. Killarnee (talk) 20:51, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
- To editor Killarnee: in the case of the Alpenrhein River redirect, the "from" language has been changed to "de" (German). There is no reason to use another instance of this template for the English "River" to "Rhine", the latter also used in English. In those cases that I've come across where there are multiple languages involved, I've used multiple instances of this template to categorize them properly. An example is the Tartupaluk redirect.
- From the beginning, the fallback for uncoded languages has been to use the "und" (undetermined) code – that is how editors know that the language does not have an ISO language code. Thank you for your help with these redirects! P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 13:59, 14 December 2024 (UTC)
- I've clarified the verbage in the links to "as-yet-undetermined or uncoded language". P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 06:15, 15 December 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks. Using the same template twice for the same redirect is something I didn't considered because it feels kind of counterintuitive, but it is a workaround.
- I already saw in the documentation that und is the default, but I don't think we should use this if we actually know the language. There are Category:Redirects to X-language terms categories which are completely empty, while there is the Category:Redirects to undetermined-language terms fallback category which has over 37,000 redirects listed. As Wikipedia is primarily for readers, if you come across a language redirect and there is even an article about that language then it seems to be a better practice to link these languages too despite not having their own code. That doesn't mean there is a need for more categories but if we know the language of the redirect we shouldn't hide that information from the reader and let them guess.
- It's difficult to implement uncoded languages without breaking the fixed enumeration and causing that languages are used that don't even exist, though, so it's a suggestion only and not something that needs to be fixed soon. Killarnee (talk) 17:51, 15 December 2024 (UTC)
