Schools in Miropiko
[edit]Mention of one school in Miropiko has been deleted, but another expanded. Should Miropiko be in this article, rather than with Chartwell? Johnragla (talk) 04:46, 19 October 2020 (UTC)
- As far as I am aware, there is no suburb called Miropiko, although there is a small reserve with that name, and a kindergarden next to it. According to Fire & Emergency boundaries, both Fairfield and Chartwell extend west to the river, and the boundary between them is a complicated line a little to the north of Clarkin Drive. However, Statistics New Zealand adds an area unit called Miropiko, which runs along the east bank of the river in areas adjacent to Fairfield and Chartwell, but doesn't actually extend as far south as the reserve. It makes Clarkin Road the boundary between Fairfield and Porritt. I would guess they've made this a separate area unit because it has a much higher average income than either Chartwell or Fairfield - River Road was always a desirable address. I have chosen to interpret Porritt as part of Chartwell, because it doesn't appear to be a suburb. Faurfield College and Fairfield Intermediate are both just north of Clarkin Road, so it seems the Fire & Emergency boundaries are a more natural fit to the suburbs than the Statistics New Zealand ones.
- The school I moved, Waikato Diocesan, is in Miropiko according to Statistics New Zealand boundaries, and Chartwell according to Fire & Emergency. The address given on the school website is Chartwell. It seemed to fit better in Chartwell than in Fairfield.
- We could create articles for more of the census areas rather than trying to match them with existing suburbs. If we created articles on Miropiko and Porritt, then we could place some of these schools in those articles. However, this would leave Fairfield College and Fairfield Intermediate not being in the Fairfield article. I am trying to balance the natural understanding of a suburb, which includes its eponymous schools, with the boundaries provided by Statistics New Zealand, and I think Miropiko/Fairfield/Porritt is one of the more difficult areas to get right. If we did create a new article for Miropiko, I suggest River Road, Hamilton would be a more appropriate name.
- An alternative interpretation of the Statistics boundaries would be to include Miropiko in Fairfield.-gadfium 19:08, 19 October 2020 (UTC)
- Dio and Fairfield College are in Chartwell according to the fire map, or Miropiko by the StatsNZ area, which has been included in the Chartwell article and does include Chartwell Crescent. Google maps shows other businesses with Fairfield names also north of either boundary. The options seem to be to move Miropiko from the Chartwell to the Fairfield article, or just note the anomalies in both articles. Johnragla (talk) 13:37, 21 October 2020 (UTC)
- I've been thinking about this for the last couple of days. The boundary between Fairfield and Chartwell/Porritt is not too much of an issue for me, as all suburbs in New Zealand are localities without fixed boundaries, and I do try to include schools which match the suburb name in the article even if they are just outside the boundaries of the census areas. Miropiko is still a concern, because it cuts right across these two suburbs, and I think the neatest solution is to create an article for it, removing it from the Chartwell demographics. The new article would include Waikato Diocesan. I am undecided whether to call the new article Miropiko, which I now realise comes from Mikopiko Pā even though it is just outside the area of the census unit called Miropiko, or River Road, Hamilton which would have greater name recognition from most residents of the city. @Qwertyxp2000, Walkerbull, and Adabow: pinging active Wikipedians who are listed as residing in Hamilton or in the Waikato for comment.-gadfium 01:52, 22 October 2020 (UTC)
- I'm personally not very familiar with the Fairfield region, and even worse with the Miropiko region. I myself am more familiar with east side of Hamilton along the south-east and mid-east. If the separate Miropiko article has enough notability, then I would safely make a new article on it. Otherwise you can as well merge into River Road, Hamilton. - I mean, River Road seems pretty noteworthy to me, personally, but objectively I am not quite sure... Qwertyxp2000 (talk | contribs) 02:05, 22 October 2020 (UTC)
- I lived around that area for over 17 years and have never heard anyone refer to the area as Miropiko. I'm not sure if this helps, but NZ post places the schools in the Chartwell postcode rather than the Fairfield one. Adabow (talk) 06:06, 25 October 2020 (UTC)
- Huh, no wonder the name "Miropiko" sounds so not within my mind. I doubt anyone even calls that area "Miropiko" anymore... And yeah, it seems a lot of places are merged with Chartwell... Qwertyxp2000 (talk | contribs) 01:22, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

I have now created a new article River Road, Hamilton for the Miropiko statistical area.-gadfium 03:43, 29 October 2020 (UTC)
