Free Addon

Kudos to Wikipedia, I did not know Thief II had a free addon!

Version without cutscenes

I purchased as version of the game (a "full" version included with an issue of Computer Gaming World) and when it ran there were no cutscenes setting up the missions. I remember playing my brother's original copy and it too had no cutscenes. Is it worth noting that some editions of this game lack these sequences? 68.145.238.33 20:53, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

Check the disk. It's unimaginable that the briefings would be excluded from a legitimaate copy. The game wouldn't make any sense at all without them. However codec problems often make the game skip playing them and go straight to the mission. They should play fine in Media Player outside the game. If they don't even play in MP there ought to be an installer for the Indeo codec on the disk (normally it's installed along with the game). MuJoCh 13:48, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
I agree, the game is probably skipping them. I've had at least some mission videos get skipped, which confused the hell out of me (all worked fine in media player however). I always thought it was a bug in the game. Python 06:03, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
There are well-documented problems with the cutscenes in modern versions of Windows. Simply running regsvr32.exe lgvid.ax from your Thief dir, or running it with the full path of lgvid.ax from elsewhere, will sort the problem and make the cutscenes play again. You may have to do this every time you start the game.
Launching Thief through one of the Fan Mission launchers, DarkLoader or GarrettLoader, should automatically re-register the codecs for you each time you play. This information should probably be added to the article. Reference is here: http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=75031#movies Nameless Voice 12:45, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
I beleive that kind of tech help, like game guide info, is frowned upon, but a link to helpful information is a perfectly fine addition. MuJoCh 19:38, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

Fog

I'm not sure exactly what levels have fog in them (to know if it's working for me); in fact, I don't have "fog" mentioned once on the page after a find [or the series page]. Could someone add info about its addition and maybe a few examples of levels with it?—Moonraker0 (talk) 00:25, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Storyline

The Mission Overview section is worthless: it consists mainly of sentences repeated almost verbatim from the missions' opening cutscenes. I would prefer something like Thief: The Dark Project: a classic plot synopsis. Korodzik (talk) 12:30, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Agreed, and it's a shame as the character section is excellent. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.242.246.51 (talk) 21:27, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

More intelligent level designs?

The phrase "more intelligent level designs" is...strange. The original Thief game's levels were extremely well laid out. So well, in fact, that a few of them remain exemplary in the industry, and are often cited as examples of level design brilliance by pros to this day. I've never heard anything like that about Thief 2's levels. At any rate, this statement is really dubious and likely flat out silly, wrong, or whatever word you'd choose to use.71.112.33.190 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 17:00, 28 May 2010 (UTC).

Will add to this as I find more. JimmyBlackwing (talk) 05:09, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Based on these, I am attempting to improve the article. Unfortunately it basically needs writing complete from scratch. Any assistance is most welcome. Rehevkor 17:28, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
Sounds good. I'll begin working on a Reception section immediately. JimmyBlackwing (talk) 23:59, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Dreamcast version

I don't understand the motives of constantly denying the fact that there exists an unreleased Dreamcast version of Thief II. This was cancelled before it could even be announced to the public, and a prototype has been found now on a Dreamcast Development Box coming from Eidos which also has a prototype of the unreleased Dreamcast version of System Shock 2. Kinda makes sense, doesn't it? I have even showed the clear evidence of it that there is available at the moment, and it should be valid since that discussion board is where the discovery of the prototype has taken place. Is it really needed to wait for the prototype to be leaked in order for some people to understand this game was intended for the Dreamcast? Or will be still needed to add a "reliable source" of what is a fact? Seriously, some people should be more reasonable and less robot-like about this. (Mr Wesker (talk) 23:24, 2 June 2010 (UTC))

If there are no reliable sources covering it there's really nothing to add here. Rehevkor 00:06, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

Thief II Gold

While it's probably worth mentioning that Thief 2 Gold was planned, I cannot find any coverage on the fan project. All the sources provided are primary. Unless something turns up that can support all that text I don't believe it has a place in the article. Normally I'd just delete it but I'll invite editors to weigh in first. Rehevkor 22:05, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

  • I went ahead and deleted it. There might be something reliable that covers the existence of Looking Glass' Thief II Gold, but definitely not the cancelled fan project. Either way, fan pages, and the fascinating-but-unpublished primary source Emil's Journal, are not up to Wikipedia's quality standards. JimmyBlackwing (talk) 02:29, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

Thief 2X Soapbox

The section portraying Thief 2X as an expansion of Thief 2 is dishonest and misleading. Thief2X has no connection to the official Thief franchise, whether through Eidos or Looking Glass, neither of which have endorsed its content. It is a mod and should be included in a separate article or section specifically titling it as such. Wikipedia is not Myspace; it is not a medium for developers to distribute and advertise their products in. I recommend this section either for deletion or for inclusion in a new section detailing the official game's many fan-made modifications. PalusSomni 16:29, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

I've added the word 'unofficial' to the heading, which already helps a lot, but the article stills sounds slightly biased. Not sure how to clean it up. Nameless Voice 12:42, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure it should be included on the game page itself, and it would be better if it was moved. It is already mentioned here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thief_(computer_game_series) and little new information is being provided by this particular entry. Perhaps Thief mods and missions should have their own page, if they don't already. However, if it's to stay then this article ought to explicitly state in the opening few lines what it is, and it doesn't. For instance, it should say that "It is an unofficial mod, which introduces a fan-made campaign to Thief II: The Metal Age." Possibly change "a group of enthusiastic fan developers" and remove 'enthusiastic', and the expression "extend the Thief universe" could be misleading. Remove instances of "game" and perhaps replace them with "mod". This part still reads like an advert: "A patch for T2X is in development which will contain artwork updates and address bugs and other issues with the original release. This is expected Summer 2006," as does the bottom line. I don't recall the original articles on Thief and its universe including this sort of advertising or "praise". Automated hamster 13:17, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
Leaving it as an "expansion pack" is somewhat misleading also, I think, for the same reasons. T2X skirts the line between mod and total conversion. It is only an expansion in the sense that it expands on the Thief universe for its own purposes and that's not the typical understanding of 'expansion pack' in my experience. According to the history this section was its own article but was merged for being too small. I agree that if its to stay it will have to be made smaller and more part of the article (as it stands its the best referenced part!). It's something I plan on attending to if no one else gets there first. MuJoCh 19:38, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
Both "expansion pack" and "developer" are professional terms rarely, if ever, applied to amateur modding efforts. 50.54.237.170 (talk) 08:47, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

Orphaned references in Thief II: The Metal Age

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Thief II: The Metal Age's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "nextgen":

  • From Voyager (video game): V. Sherman, Christopher (November 1995). "Movers & Shakers; Viacom Pulls Out Its Wallet". Next Generation Magazine (11).
  • From Flight Unlimited: Bateman, Shelby (February 1995). "Movers & Shakers". Next Generation Magazine (2): 29.

  • From British Open Championship Golf: Staff (February 1997). "British Open Golf". Next Generation Magazine (26): 78.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 21:57, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

I am a Good Article reviewer recruitee and this is the first article I reviewed. I know the Good Article criteria though. But I am sorry if I had gotten something wrong in the review. For example, I saw a lot of [ ] with text in the middle, and that was one of the things I think it should be fixed. But maybe it's supposed to be there, just explain it to me and I'll change it in the review.

If you have any problems, or if you fixed all the areas I pointed out, please leave a message on my talk page.RegardsTheQ Editor (Talk) 20:55, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

7. Overall assessment. Awesome!

Specific problems with "Well Written"

  • Would be better if there's a See Also section
  • Done.
  • Word "prophesized" misspelled. No "z"
  • Done.
  • Word "moreso". Not a word
  • Done.
  • Word "Mages" not supposed to be proper.
  • The word appears in a quote. I can't change it. I could add a {{sic}}, if you like.
  • Phrase "the The New York Times" looks weird. Perhaps putting The New York Times in quotations?
  • That was actually a typo. Fixed.
  • Word "sequel-itis". I don't understand.
  • As with the other one, this appears inside a quote. I can't change it. "Sequel-itis" (more commonly rendered "sequelitis") is an informal term used to describe the loss of freshness, innovation and inspiration in a video game sequel.
  • The article has lots of [text] such as [and], accept[ing], [their], [us], [we], [... and], [...] and [were]
  • Yes, it does. It's used to cut down quotes to a manageable size. As far as I know, it doesn't violate any MOS guidelines. I've never seen any objections to it at FAC.
  • Fix wikilink disambugiation page of Ken Levine. Please specify which one.

Thief II: The Metal AgeThief II – (Thief 2 works too.) This game's common name, as invoked in the major sources, is not the subtitle but the portion that comes before it (also in keeping with the subtitle naming convention). The official name can be listed in the lede, but otherwise, the game is best known in reliable sources by its shorter version. czar 07:17, 7 December 2015 (UTC)
