Getting this article to a reasonable length
[edit]As watchers may have seen from my template additions, I'm very concerned at the excessive length of this article. It needs some major trimming, either by deleting excessive detail or by splitting some content to other articles. Right now it utterly fails WP:Summary style. The "Fittings and appliances" and "The end of steam in general use" sections are the worst offenders, but every single section could use some cleanup. "Show, not tell"
[edit]This article has an extreme amount of infomation but fails to explain its meaning or impact very well, in other words, it tells the readers facts, instead of showing the facts. Im not sure how to fix this but i thought it would be worth it to point out Lunoxis (talk) 01:00, 20 February 2022 (UTC)
p.s. im not sure how the formatting works here so feel free to correct it if im wrong
- @Lunoxis: I've moved your comment to the bottom of the talk page, as on Wikipedia, new talk page comments go at the bottom, not the top. As to your comment, I've made similar observations (see immediately above), but haven't quite figured out how to address the issue. I know this article is too long, but cleaning it up would take a long time and I'm not sure I want to really engage in that right now. Trainsandotherthings (talk) 01:41, 20 February 2022 (UTC)
split some sections?
[edit]here's an idea: split the end of steam use and manufacture sections into seperate articles and just have a very breif summary on the main page those 2 parts of this article take up a condiserable amount of space and anyone reading this article probably isnt gonna need any of that info. Lunoxis (talk) 07:48, 20 February 2022 (UTC)
- I think that's an excellent idea. A good article to compare this one to is Train, which is a Good article, meaning it has gone through vetting to meet certain standards. You can see that the article on train intentionally avoids going into too much detail or listing too much information, instead giving summaries of different aspects and linking to other articles which cover certain aspects in more detail. That is what we should aspire to achieve with Steam locomotive. Additionally, we already have an article for Steam locomotive components, which much of the contents in the fittings and appliances section can be moved to. By the way, you don't have to make a new section for each post on a talk page, you can instead just hit edit and add your comment to an existing section if you so choose. Make sure to use 1 or more colons to indent your reply (you can see I used one colon when I typed this reply, to indent it one level). Trainsandotherthings (talk) 15:30, 20 February 2022 (UTC)
Nuclear steam locomotive plans omitted from the article?
[edit]The red thingy in this picture is apparently a more or less standard british steam locomotive envisioned with the firebox swapped for a reactor. The gray one is the US concept about a nuclear-steam train designed as such from the scratch: http://vilagvasutai.hu/amerikai/amjarmu/Atommozdony/cimkep.png 77.234.84.27 (talk) 17:44, 18 January 2023 (UTC)
