– The proper names of these awards do not include the word award, as checking news sources verifies. About half of these were originally correct and were capped in 2021 without discussion, for consistency with nba. Consistency with our own MOS:CAPS and WP:NCCAPS is a better way to go. Alternatively, we could just drop the word award from the titles. Dicklyon (talk) 01:26, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I got the list from this template. Note that the listed award names do not include the word award in almost all cases. Examples of current usage in news can be found here, etc. Dicklyon (talk) 01:27, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Support The string Best Player of the Year (and similar) is clearly a descriptive noun phrase capitalised for significance - contrary to MOS:SIGNIFCAPS. While they might be capitalised with some consistency within the niche of the PBA, more generally (see here) there is mixed capitalisation. I don't see good reason to capitalise the type of award in these titles (eg Best Player of the Year should be best player of the year). It is certainly clear from the evidence provided by the nom that award is not capitallised in sources and should not be capitalised in these titles. You're supporting more downcasing than I'm proposing here – I'm only proposing to downcase award, and still treat Best Player of the Year as the proper name of the award. I'm open to your alternative, but I think it's less likely to fly. Dicklyon (talk) 03:29, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Support downcasing "award" and only that word. MOS:SIGNIFCAPS seems to be another usage altogether, like calling the PBA as "the Association". In proper nouns such as this, the first part of the article name does apply to that, and "award" no longer does so. Howard the Duck (talk) 18:32, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
MOS:SIGNIFCAPS applies to any use of caps to make a particular word or phrase (not a proper noun) stand out in text for significance, emphasis or importance. Proper nouns are arbitrary and not descriptive of their referent (see here). Proper nouns have a specific referent but this is not a defining property since specificity also occurs through use of the definite article (the). These awards are inherently descriptive of what the award is made for and are also used with the definite article. By contrast, the Samboy Lim award tells us it is an award but nothing about what the award is for - additional context or description is need for us to know what the award is for. In proper nouns such as this ... is an unsubstantiated assertion. Cinderella157 (talk) 03:16, 13 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
