Banknotes

[edit]

Can anyone contribute more information about the banknotes of the Papal States? They're not listed in my (rather old) copy of Standard Catalog of World Paper Money.

The catalog numbers are PS-prefixed. Volume 1 (specialized issue)? --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 06:46, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm assuming that's it. Does anyone have a copy of Volume 1?

Value of Scudo?

[edit]

I can see the difficulty, consumer basket and all, but is it possible to estimate the value of a scudo in today's currency? In literature, a lot of payments in papal scudos to the most famous artists of that time are mentioned. It would be pretty interesting to determine how much Michelangelo was worth to the church when he worked in the Sixtine Chapel, or how much Clement XII's prelate rank in 1730 cost him in today's dollars. --77.6.83.146 (talk) 16:49, 5 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Subdivisions

[edit]

"It was subdivided into 100 baiocchi (singular: baiocco), each of 5 quattrini (singular: quattrino)." Seems unlikely to me. First, quattrino means quarter, it being worth one fifth of a baiocco would belie its name. Second, there were coins of 1/2 baiocco. These would in turn be worth 2 1/2 quattrino. It seems altogether more plausible if a baiocco was worth four quattrini, and 1/2 baiocco equalled two of them. Steinbach (talk) 16:42, 22 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
