Head photo

[edit]

The head photo isn't right: that's not Massawa! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.24.85.25 (talk) 18:00, 3 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed - I've removed it.  An optimist on the run! 15:35, 10 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Italian landing of 1885.

[edit]

The Italian troops (800 men led by Colonel Tancredi Saletta), supported by the Italian corvette "Amerigo Vespucci" and by the British gunboat "Condor", took Massawa on February 5, 1885. The troops reached the harbour by the steamer "Gottardo".

Climate

[edit]

I remember from my schooldays that Massawa's climate is exceptionally hot and humid so I added a brief note to that effect, but so far I haven't been able to find a satisfactory reference; perhaps someone else could help out here?

Medri Bahri was an independent Eritrean kingdom, which governed Massawa as well.
