I've completely re-written this article, giving it a general clean-up, and also added a new section and image. Still some work to do, though! --Commander Zulu 04:22, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps the Advantages section should list that it's possible to reload rifles with this action using only one hand? It may be a bit of a party trick, or a Hollywood affectation, but John Wayne could do it and so can Arnie (as seen in Terminator 2, when he's riding the motorbike and keeps reloading by spinning the thing round). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.236.134.146 (talk) 15:24, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

dumb question

[edit]

What do you call it when you use the lever to reload? Since it's not a pump-action rifle, calling it "pumping" doesn't sound right. Thanks. 4.249.3.206 (talk) 23:53, 19 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Levering"; or working the action--lock and load; I guess. I've heard guys refer to "pumping another" with even a bolt action. Pumps are often called "slide actions"--but I've never heard anyone "slide one". Not Yet...68.231.184.217 (talk) 13:34, 4 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Volanic and Jennings

[edit]

The Volcanic was probably the first lever action repeating rifle. It came out in limited production in the 1850's. It was "copied" by Jennings, then by B. Tyler Henry, then by Winchester. Improvements on the basic toggle-link design of the Volcanic were used in the 1873 and 1876 Winchester. This article makes it look likwe the "lever-action" was invented in 1860. Why isn't the Volcanic mentioned? Wiki even has an Article on it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcanic_rifle - Cached.68.231.184.217 (talk) 13:25, 4 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I believe it has something to do with most single-shot lever-action rifles don't feed or extract as part of the operation of the lever. Most are feed cartridges by hand and extracted by hand.Pigoutultra (talk) 17:03, 3 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No, this isn't true. Lever action Is Lever-action. Just like bolt-action Is bolt action; doesn't nmatter if it's a repeater or not. The predecessor has first dibs.

It's just that the term "lever action" has been wharped in time to a generic that makes one think first Only of a repeater--Winchester, etc, but is technically all-inclusive of All levers. It's like using the colloquialism: "Victrola" to describe all old hand-cranked record players, when only Victor (R.C.A.) made a Victrola.

The term:"under-lever, falling-block" is often used to describe Martini-Henrys, Pepodys, Sharps, etc. It Is mentioned at bottom of article--I read on.68.231.184.217 (talk) 13:32, 4 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Advantages and disadvantages?

[edit]

One significant reason for this was that it is harder to fire a lever-action from the prone position (compared to a straight-pull or rotating-bolt bolt-action rifle).....Wrong, you can turn the rifle in horizontal position to load it.

Lever-action firearms are also generally fed from a tubular magazine, which limits the type of ammunition that can be used in them..... Wrong, the Winchester Model 1895, you forgot the Savage Model 99, the Browning BLR, the Finnwolf SACO are Lever-actions with a box magazine. The tubular magazine is not characteristic for a lever-action rifle. 1855/60, when Henry developed the Henry Rifle, box magazines were not yet invented. hmaag (talk) 09:35, 15 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
