– Per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, Tom Kim the golfer (born Kim Joo-hyung) is more prominent than Tom Kim the doctor. In the past 90 days, the golfer's Wikipedia page has over 64,000 pageviews, while the doctor's has a mere 814. The golfer is also the top result when searching Google News. Logically, it follows that a professional athlete who receives global coverage in sport news would be known to a wider audience than a doctor who founded a local clinic in Tennessee. The golfer has also said he prefers to be referred to as "Tom" instead of by his given name (fitting the guidance under WP:COMMONNAME) — and he is now referred to as such on the PGA Tour's official website — hence why it makes sense to rename his article instead of creating a disambiguation or continuing use of the hatnote on the doctor's article. - Support per nom.--Ortizesp (talk) 00:12, 25 September 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose I can see that he's adopted a daft westernized name for American tastes. I know there's a tradition of giving Asians such names (eg “Chick” Chin. Joe Ozaki) but personally I find the whole thing quite distasteful. Perhaps that's not a valid reason for opposing but I'd prefer to stick to his actual name, as is our usual style for Korean golfers. Clearly he's referred to that in Korea. Sometimes where bad taste is invoived, Wikipedia should lead and not follow. Nigej (talk) 07:45, 25 September 2022 (UTC)
- To follow on from Nige's point, I would agree it seems very US centric. Other good examples of Asian players (who all primarily play in the US) in the same situation include: Yuan Yechun (Carl Yuan), Yu Chun-an (Kevin Yu) and Dou Zecheng (Marty Dou). Wikipedia has kept the real name for these players, as outside the US, their real names rather than US nicknames would most likely be used more frequently. - Support. I've also added a PROD tag to the other Tom Kim, who doesn't seem to be notable. 162 etc. (talk) 17:29, 25 September 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose There are as many reliable sources when searching under his birth name in Google news as that of Tom Kim. There is no apparent common name at the moment. There are still publications and syndicated content (AFP, Reuters) that uses his birth name as recent as last week. Preference of the subject to be referred as a name is not a guidance under WP:COMMONNAME but WP:OFFICIALNAME. – robertsky (talk) 06:01, 2 October 2022 (UTC)
Post-move comment
[edit]There was no opposition to the second part of the move request (Tom Kim → Tom Kim (doctor)), so I've carried that out and created a primary redirect of Tom Kim to this article. 162 etc. (talk) 17:04, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
- @162 etc. no. that's unnecessary – robertsky (talk) 19:05, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
- I have reverted the move. As far as I am concerned, the RM is about both titles as a package. – robertsky (talk) 19:13, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
- Please see new RM at Talk:Tom Kim. 162 etc. (talk) 20:27, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks. – robertsky (talk) 02:47, 6 October 2022 (UTC)

Kim Joo-hyung → Tom Kim – In accordance with wikipedia naming conventions WP:COMMONNAME should be followed and based on everything I have seen the common name for this subject in English language articles is Tom Kim. The guidance in WP:TRANSLITERATE provides further guidance on the anglicization of names and states that we should used English-language use in the English language version of wikipedia. Thanks Tracland (talk) 07:51, 13 January 2023 (UTC)
- Support. See also previous RM above, as well as the RM at Talk:Tom Kim (physician). 162 etc. (talk) 17:07, 13 January 2023 (UTC)
- Support. Given that the subject is now being more commonly reported as Tom Kim rather than as Kim Joo-hyung in the news. – robertsky (talk) 18:49, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
- Support. Per above. We have reached the stage where this seems sensible. OWGR switched from Joohyung Kim to Tom Kim from 11 December 2022. Nigej (talk) 19:03, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
