[edit]"... was appointed Engineer-in-Charge for the New South Wales Railways, Australia, in January 1867 ..." Sure? My source (Jim Powe: Trains and Railways of Australia. 2. Aufl. Sydney 2009. ISBN 9781741109023) says: January 1857. -- Reinhard Dietrich (talk) 09:53, 21 January 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks. A good pick up, not that I edited the first date. But I have now corrected. In fact, Whitton was appointed to role in March 1856, while in the UK. He arrived in Sydney, via Melbourne, and commenced as EIC in January 1857. However, prior to his arrival in the Colony, he was already at work sourcing materials and plans for stations, bridges, yards, tracks, etc. Rangasyd (talk) 12:52, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
Whitton History
[edit]as engineer in chief, he would have overseen everything being done.
did he actually design any of it or was it to a standard sort of plan?
actual design or set of plan styles, did he go everywhere to watch but obviously not to actually build ... (yeah, i should go read a book) Dave Rave (talk) 23:41, 28 May 2016 (UTC)
