A minor issue, but the end product of luminal protein digestion are di and tripeptides, not amino acids. These are further processed inside enterocytes. Amanitin 06:47, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

- I must agree, this article isn't so hot. I'm working on it now. --Joshuagross 17:46, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
From a comment in the article:
Things to mention (maybe):
- Expression of various digestive enzymes
- Expresion of various transporters for absorption
- Migration and Differentiation of Enterocytes
- Difference in Villi: Small vs Large Intestines
- Metabolism and transport of xenobiotics (drugs and chemicals)
- Crypts ...
- Any more? Please add

I am changing the section calling intestinal villi "Homologues of Alveoli" to "Analogues of Alveoli." The structure/function comparison between the two is sound (thus, they are analogous), but anatomical homology implies common descent (which is not the case). The mechanisms present in the intestinal villi and in the alveoli evolved independently of each other. Lord of Cocytus (talk) 01:43, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
Grammar
[edit]I fixed a couple of simple subject/verb number discrepancies but have no knowledge to fix this: in Function sentence "In all humans, the villi together increase intestinal absorptive surface area approximately 30-fold and 60-fold, respectively, ..." there is no pair of subjects to refer to these two numbers "respectively"! In all adults this happens either one number or the other (os some other number or range). Iph (talk) 17:39, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
I just came here to say the same thing. What two things increase 30-fold and 60-fold? There only seems to be one thing increasing: intestinal absorptive surface area. M-1 (talk) 05:44, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
Smooth muscle
[edit]- The Gray's Anatomy illustration shows smooth muscle. At a guess this allows a villus to be waved, presumably creating flow into and out of the lumen. Perhaps the movement of the villi is even coordinated? A paragraph or two by someone who knows the purpose of the smooth muscle would be useful. 2.99.115.248 (talk) 06:39, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
