Regarding "In 1887, to provide funding for more boarding schools, Congress passed the Compulsory Indian Education Act.", does anyone have a primary source anywhere regarding the name of the act? I looked through the congressional documents for 1887 and it doesn't mention this name, doesn't appear to have anything in it that makes attendance compulsory, just some funding information for the boarding schools and it also says specifically parental consent is required. Other documents from the Carlisle school speak about how they wish school was compulsory, but it wasn't, and the only reference to compulsion by the US Congress is in 1891 they authorize the withholding of subsistence funds for children who don't attend school (though it doesn't specifically say boarding school). The cited source is a student dissertation with a source (Child, 1993), but there is no actual Child 1993 in the bibliography. This improper citation brings some doubt on the reliability of the source. Erikgpearson (talk) 00:19, 2 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
