Seeking feedback on Google Groups article
Hello. I wrote an article about a related topic, Google Groups. As a new Wikipedia writer, I would appreciate any feedback on my article. Please help me by posting your feedback at the Wikipedia:Article Feedback Desk. If you wrote an article and are seeking feedback on it, please post your article at the Article Feedback Desk as well. If you could suggest better ways for me to seek feedback on my article, do leave a note at my talk page. --J.L.W.S. The Special One 13:14, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
Incomplete
I came across this page, and noticed Dutch wasn't one of the languages GT offers. However, this link clearly shows that translation from/to Dutch is possible. I haven't checked if any other languages are missing, and since I don't know when it was added, I will not add it to the article either. But I sure hope someone who knows more about it will :) -- Sander (talk) 19:34, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
How do I know which combination has the biggest bilangual corpus?
If you know two languages (nr.1 nr. 2) well and you want to translate text into a third one then what language should you choose. I guess the one with the biggest bilangual corpus between them yields the best translation. But what is it? And how do I know which combination has a bigger corpus 1 & 3 or 2 & 3? Beta version
I tried the oldest translations French-English and Arab-English and even they are labelled beta when accessed from the Netherlands, so I concluded that the whole service is beta. Andries (talk) 07:57, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
Please try to access these services from other countries too, because the information provided by google is automatically adapted dependent on the country from which you are accessing. I do not know how to turn it off. Andries (talk) 08:16, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

Names of Google Translate in other languages

"Pranks"
The page says that there are "pranks" in the Slovenian module. These aren't pranks, they are errors due to the method used - statistical machine translation - and exist for every language pair. I have gotten some of the most bizarre translation mistakes. Perhaps the most common are substitutions of proper names (the Tagalog to English translated "Pilipinas" as "Japan" in certain sentences, for example). --Node (talk) 04:02, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
- I just had an Italian>English translation in which "Italia" became "Canada". However, when I removed the context, the translation was correct. Anyway, the Criticism section has already been removed. --94.79.143.154 (talk) 15:18, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
Some queries return very strange results. Hungarian->English: "ostobaság"->"nonsense" (OK) but "Ostobaság"->"Toshiba". What are they going for, Pearl Harbor II?--87.162.4.157 (talk) 20:41, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
You can mix English and Dutch
When translating into Russian, you can mix English & Dutch and it will translate both into Russian. I found out by accident and did not read it anywhere. Andries (talk) 19:25, 21 February 2009 (UTC)
- It's probably because most (all?) translations use English as an intermediate language. So it will recognize the language as Dutch and translate from Dutch to English first and leave the English words intact, unless they resemble Dutch words. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.162.4.157 (talk) 20:44, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

Cyclical translations
I just added an example of "cyclical" translations that probably will be quickly removed because it's OR:
- This effect can be seen by repeatedly translating a given input back and forth between two languages, using the output of one translation as the input to the next. For example, using a line from Shakespeare's Hamlet and the languages English and Japanese, one obtains the following sequence of results:
- To be or not to be; that is the question.
- するかどうかできるようにするには、問題であることを確認します。
- To whether to allow, make sure to be a problem.
- 許可するかどうかをするには、問題であることを確認してください。
- For if you accept it, please make sure to be a problem.
- あなたが問題になることを確認してください、それを受け入れる場合にしてください。
- Please make sure you have a problem, if you please accept it.
- あなたはそれを受け入れてください場合は、問題を抱えていることを確認してください。
- If you accept it please, please make sure that you have a problem.
- 同意する場合は、あなたが問題を抱えていることを確認してください、お願いします。
- If you agree, please make sure you have a problem, thank you.
- 同意する場合は、あなたが、あなたに感謝問題を抱えていることを確認してください。
- If you agree, you confirm that please thank you have a problem.
- 同意する場合は、あなたが問題を抱えて感謝してくださいことを確認します。
- If you agree, please verify that you have a problem thanks.
- 同意する場合は、問題のおかげを持っていることを確認してください。
- If you agree, please make sure you have the thanks of the problem.
- The last two translations are stable in the sense that each is translated into the other, so no new sentences are created by repeated translations.
I wonder if anyone can find a similar example worth citing in the article. It seems to me that this has some relevance to the quality of translations between languages that use English as an intermediary. By the way, compare the above output to that of Babel Fish for the same initial input:
- To be or not to be; that is the question.
- あるためまたはないため; それは質問である。
- Because of a certain or because it is not; That is question.
- のためにまたはないので; それは質問である。
- Because or it is not for the sake of; That is question.
- のためにないのでまたはそれ; それは質問である。
- Because it is not for the sake of or that; That is question.
- それがのためにまたはそれないので; それは質問である。
- Because or it cannot curve that for the sake of; That is question.
- それをのために曲げることができないのでまたはそれ; それは質問である。
- Because it is not possible or to bend because of that, that; That is question.
- それが可能またはこのような理由で曲がるためにではないので、それ; それは質問である。
- Because it is not because that bends in the possibility or this kind of reason, that; That is question.
- その理由の可能性かこの種類で曲がるのでそれがないので、それ; それは質問である。
- Because it bends in possibility or this type of the reason, because it is not that, that; That is question.
- それが理由の可能性かこのタイプで曲がるので、それではないので、それ; それは質問である。
- That bends in possibility or this type of the reason because, then because it is not, that; That is question.
- ないのでその理由の可能性かこのタイプでので、そして、それ曲がる; それは質問である。
- Because it is not, in possibility or this type of the reason because, and, that it bends; That is question.
- それがないので、理由の可能性かこのタイプで、および、曲げるそれので; それは質問である。
- Because it is not that, because in possibility or this type of the reason, and, that it bends; That is question.
- それが曲げる理由の可能性かこのタイプでこと、ので、およびではないので、; それは質問である。
- In possibility or this type of the reason which that bends thing, because, and because is not; That is question.
- その事を曲げる理由の可能性かこのタイプではないので、ので、そして; それは質問である。
- Because it is not possibility or this type of the reason which bends the, because, and; That is question.
I stopped there because it didn't seem to be leading to a stable pair of translations. It's interesting how BF latches on to "That is question" and never lets it go, but the rest of the output gets more and more inscrutable, whereas each iteration of GT makes sense, more or less, but retains none of the original meaning. - dcljr (talk) 18:29, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
Google Toolbar Word Translator feature not mentioned in Browser Integration Subsection
I have noticed that the Google Toolbar word translator (documented at [GoogleHelp]) is not in the Browser Integration section of this article. Nor is the Google Toolbar word translator feature mentioned in the Google Toolbar article. It should be in both articles as it is a major user of Google Translator services (perhaps the most major one) and it is a major feature of the Toolbar, one which many foreign students at English language universities use. I have seen them use the toolbar at ANU in Canberra on their laptops.
I am the creator of the GoogleTrans Wikipedia gadget which offers services similar to the Google Toolbar word translator. I placed reference to this in the Browser Integration subsection of the article. User:Tedder removed this reference and we had the following exchange at User_talk:Tedder#GoogleTrans_is_an_example_of_browser_integration_with_GoogleTranslate.
My main argument for inclusion of the word translator of the Google Toolbar in the Browser Integration section is that the Toolbar is probably the major user of Google Translation services in the world. It is indeed an extension/active control of the browser. The section is just not informative unless the word translator of the Toolbar is mentioned.
It is odd that the word translator is missing from both Google Translate and Google Toolbar.
As well, I would argue for a brief mention, possibly not mentioning Wikipedia, of my GoogleTrans gadget, as it is the only Javascript code that substantially replicates and extends the Google Toolbar word translator. As such it is of interest to programmers.
Wikipedia is a multi-language site, one of the biggest in the world. It should use such language translator tools as the Google Toolbar and the GoogleTrans gadget. Overcoming language barriers is one of the goals of Wikipedia, secondary only to sharing knowledge and banishing ignorance.

Here in Germany (translate.google.de) Google uses a European Spanish accent. When I type in "cerveza" it's pronounced with "th" (thervetha). Also the translator here use an European English accent -- If I type in "beer" it's pronounced non-rothic; and "current" is pronunced with [a] (cahrrent). Also, not all voices are female, the European English accent is definitively male. --2.244.68.17 (talk) 18:27, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

A single parent (or solo parent) is a parent, not living with a spouse or partner, who has most of the day-to-day responsibilities in raising the child or children. A single parent is usually considered the primary caregiver, meaning the parent the children have residency with the majority of the time.[1] If the parents are separated or divorced, children live with their custodial parent and have visitation or secondary residence with their noncustodial parent.[2] In western society in general, following separation, a child will end up with the primary caregiver, usually the mother, and a secondary caregiver, usually the father.[3]
Historically, death of a partner was a major cause of single parenting.[4] Single parenting can result from separation, death, child abuse/neglect, or divorce of a couple with children. Custody battles, awarded by the court or rationalized in other terms, determine who the child will spend majority of their time with. This affects children in many ways, and counseling is suggested for them. A mother is typically the primary caregiver in a single parent family structure as a result of divorce or unplanned pregnancy.
Fathers have been the less common primary caregiver in the past, presumably due to the father working most of the day resulting in less bonding with the children, or possibly a young child needing to still nurse, or if childcare was necessary while the father works, the mother would be seen to be better suited while fathers works; but this scenario has shifted in recent years, as many fathers are taking an active parental role as Stay-at-home dad as more mothers are in the workforce and being the sole provider to the family, resulting in fathers bonding and connecting more to their children.
Single parent adoption is sometimes an option for adults who want children but do not have a partner, another option could be to foster a child.
The demographics of single parenting show a general increase worldwide in children living in single parent homes.[5] Single parenting has become an accepted norm in the United States and is an accepted trend found in multiple other countries. Debates concerning not only the single parents themselves, but also the children involved, support for the families in single parent households, and more have arisen. Although divorce is one of the main events that leads to single parenting, it may be that the majority of cases in the US are from pregnancy outside of wedlock.[citation needed] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.167.36.43 (talk) 10:32, 26 January 2014 (UTC) What is this supposed to be? This is not in any way part of Google Translate, first off Google Translate would never in a million tries get paragraphs, let alone sentences so accurate and grammatically correct. You are confusing Google Translate, which translates one language to another, like German to English or French to Spanish etc. with a dictionary which give a definition as in SINGLE PARENT: A single parent (or solo parent) is a parent, not living with a spouse or partner, who has most....... This entire section should have been removed the day it was placed here. 2602:306:CF5B:6C80:6CBB:6EC6:D94D:14EF (talk) 19:02, 8 October 2014 (UTC)DOC OCK
Original research in Translation Methodology section?
In reviewing the references in the Translation Methodology section, I found three that point to actual example sentences at translate.google.com along with a lot of discussion that seems to be in violation of WP:NOR. At the moment these are references 33 through 35 and the accompanying discussion, as follows:
- 33. Google Translation mixes up "tu" and plural or polite "vous"
- 34. The meaning of the English translation is the inverse of the Russian sentence ...
- 35. ... but the English to Russian translation is correct
I don't want to blank out half the section before seeing what the consensus is. What do you all think? Scyth (talk) 03:35, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

Languages in development
Why is Chinese not called Mandarin when they are about to create Cantonese? It confuses people and makes them believe Cantonese is not Chinese, thus promoting separatism. And will the Cantonese be in simplified or traditional? Of course, Wikipedia can't be held responsible for how Google names things, but without explanations this article is already enough to mislead people. --2.245.145.148 (talk) 18:56, 5 May 2016 (UTC)

Supported languages history: Subject to deletion?
Hi!
So I took a look at the history of the supported languages. Except for a few instances of sourced info, the list is unsourced. As per the verifiability policy, we need sources for all that information. My suggestion may be a little drastic, so I welcome input, but I suggest deleting the history. Thoughts? - Hi! Thank you for writing here. There is nothing wrong with me, but I raised a serious issue about verifiability. What are your thoughts on that? LocalNet (talk) 07:10, 18 January 2017 (UTC)
- I agree with the removal of this list. In addition to verifiability/WP:OR, it has WP:IINFO issues, as it's not clear what encyclopedic value these details provide. We would need not only sources, but sources which provide substantial context. Grayfell (talk) 07:15, 18 January 2017 (UTC)
- My thoughts exactly, so I'm glad to see someone else understand the issues with the list. :) LocalNet (talk) 07:20, 18 January 2017 (UTC)

Vocal speech and Optical Character Recognition
This and this video, between possible others, explain how Google Translate interacts with microphone or the phone camera, as a tool for Vocal Speech Recognition or for Optical Character Recognition. It needs some simple settings of the app (related to the users'privacy too). Those features can easily improve the life of many people, and can be hopefully integrated in the Wikipedia's article in order to make it better more. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.38.236.241 (talk) 21:41, 12 January 2019 (UTC)

The History of Spanish language in Spain
The inhabitants of this region, an area later referred to by scholars as Hispania, started learning Latin from the romans. The combination of the Celtic language and Latin form romans. The combination of Celtic language and Latin evolved into what is referred to by many as vulgar Latin. Vulgar Latin was an adapted form of the Latin that uses phrases and words, there were different from traditional Latin. ..... To continue go to the link listed below

The addition of languages not yet supported by Google Translate under the 'Supported languages' section and its 'History' sub-section
Why do some people keep adding languages that aren't yet supported by Google Translate under the 'Supported languages' section and its 'History' sub-section, even though I've already added a hidden message under that section reminding people not to add any languages that aren't yet on the Google Translate homepage, and even though I've had to revert over 8 edits by certain users including Juansantos123, Glennbyrnes7, and Roshan shrivastav, and certain IP addresses in the past 2 weeks alone, some of which date back to early September by 5 months, and can someone please put a stop to this and prevent this from happening again? -- PK2 (talk) 19:52, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
Couldn't find some languages on google list
The article uses this official list as a source, yet names the following languages as supported: Abaza, Crimean Tatar, Kabardian. Karachay, Nogai. Maybe another source is needed to support these languages inclusion. Uziel302 (talk) 17:32, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
- Maybe those languages are still in developement. I would love to have those languages included in Google Translate. DarthonTheOverseer (talk) 13:21, 19 April 2020 (UTC)
Harold Gilchrist?
The section on Neural Machine Translation mentions "a research team at Google led by the software engineer Harold Gilchrist...". I worked on Google Translate at the time in question and have never heard of such a person. I can't find any source that mentions him, except for news articles that look like they probably copied text from this article. I recommend deleting the reference to this person. I won't do it myself because of conflict of interest. 67.188.26.87 (talk) 00:34, 1 December 2020 (UTC)
Names of the languages in development
Hello @PK2: I don't know why you reverted my edits on the languages in development section?! I updated the list according to the newest list of languages of the Google Translate community. It's better to keep the names as they have written in the Google Translate community. Serchia (talk) 18:13, 16 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Serchia: I reverted your edits on the 'languages in development' section because I prefer the language names as they're written on Wikipedia. -- PK2 (talk) 00:24, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

Languages in development and languages in beta phase
I think the "languages in development" section needs to be divided as some of those languages also have a new beta phase as well, for example Kurdish (Sorani) and Tigrinya. Joanmp14 (talk) 15:26, 26 May 2021 (UTC)

The "hidden" Community languages
Hello! I am writing here, because I think there is an interesting topic regarding GT Community.
Basically, if you are able to manipulate the source code[1], you would be able to access pages for three languages.
First is Rundi, second - Balinese, and the last is Seselwa Creole. All of the pages are for translations to English, not from English.
Code for each is respectively: "rn", "ban" and "crs".
All of the language are available as Google account's languages and, for a time, the languages from your account would be added to the Community list. So it was the way I discovered them in the first place.
It doesn't seem to work now, however.
I'm here to discuss, since it might be important, but I think it needs to be properly documented first. And it's especially hard, since Community requires a Google login.

Bengali voice
Hello, I'd like to discuss about a section about voices on a page[2]:
for Bengali, a male Bangladeshi accent is used, except in India, where a special female Indian Bengali accent is used instead.
The inspection shows, however, that both Indian[3] and Bangladeshi[4] domains use the female voice.
Either the information is dated or plain wrong, although I think is just dated.
I, unfortunately for the change's sake, have an account not old enough to edit the page, as it is semi-protected. For this, I ask the community.
Cheers, PorazonyCreeper (talk) 16:06, 5 December 2021 (UTC)

Javanese and Sundanese voices
Back when the Hebrew voice was first added, I noticed that Javanese and Sundanese had voices as well. So the bit where it says "Speech program launched in Hebrew." should be changed to say "Speech program launched in Hebrew, Javanese, and Sundanese."
ConnerMiner (talk) 12:24, 30 April 2022 (UTC)
- Javanese and Sundanese voices have been for longer than the Hebrew one - the former ones have been since at least 2020. PorazonyCreeper (talk) 12:34, 12 May 2022 (UTC)

Northern Sotho is listed in Google Translate as "Sepedi", please correct it in the article in "49th stage" section. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Translate#Supported_languages there is listed Sepedi, but in the History section, 49th stage (launched May 2022), Nothern Sotho is listed as added language, but it's the same language. 83.30.149.11 (talk) 12:21, 6 July 2022 (UTC)

Transformers
added info about transformers.
I think its still the latest hotness and is still the technology that google uses. Don't necessarily know if we should attempt to add much more info about it? On invention of universal language
The following text:
> and the system did not invent its own universal language, but uses "the commonality found in between many languages".
In the Neural machine translation section is only supported by a self-published article (a Medium blog post, to be precise), which itself offers no supporting evidence for its claims. There seem to be a number of non-self-published sources which claim the exact opposite of this text.
I think this text should be removed if a better source cannot be found, as there are a number of other published sources which claim the opposite of this. Goats Go Moo (talk) 17:22, 4 June 2024 (UTC)
UX Design
Design thinking is a problem-solving approach that involves understanding users, challenging assumptions, and redefining problems to identify alternative strategies and solutions. It's iterative and user-centric, often involving the following steps: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test. 2405:201:2018:D07A:B0CA:ADC:3A02:4E01 (talk) 13:32, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
