Definition of ESP
[edit]In 2024, a Google search for "email service provider" produces nothing other than companies offering email accounts, such as GMail, Proton Mail, Outlook, Yahoo Mail, etc. This article is about Email Marketing Providers (EMP) who offer bulk email services. Can we get some consensus to rename the article? Ash (talk) 02:00, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
- Email Service Provider is also a common technical term for email sending APIs (and companies offering them), such as Mailgun, SendGrid, MailerSend, Brevo, Postmark, AWS Simple Email Service, etc. It's not strictly for marketing email; if you request a password reset or get a receipt email after purchasing something, those will probably be sent using a "transactional email service provider." Marketing email is usually delivered by a "bulk email service provider," but bulk ESPs are not limited to marketing content.
- The technical usage of ESP is often qualified with "transactional" or "bulk" as I've done here, but it's common to omit the qualifier in context or when talking about a service that offers both.
- This article seems misleading either way. And email service provider currently redirects to mailbox provider, which is definitely something different. It perhaps merits a disambiguation page.
- Couple of citations for the technical usage:
