Move discussion in progress

[edit]

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Cupressus macnabiana which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 04:04, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Baja california population - does it exist?

[edit]

I can't find any information on the Baja California population other than Jepson mentioning "Baja California" without specific locality, and the Edinburgh source mentioning the locality but with apparently no source on it. I also can't figure out where in Mexico this place refers to since Arroyo seco and El Rincon are commonly used names.

MtBotany I'm wondering if this is a mixup with the "El Rinco" cypress H. revealiana in the Sierra Juarez, especially since the Edinburgh source uses the old variety name before this species was split? Adams+ 2014 has a distribution map with no mention of a BC population for stephensonii (http://www.phytologia.org/uploads/2/3/4/2/23422706/96271-83adams_bartel_et_al_revealiana_montana_terps_dna_3-30-14rev.pdf). I wanted to check with you before stripping this line from the article — Preceding unsigned comment added by FlightTerminationSystem (talkcontribs) 16:20, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks @FlightTerminationSystem, had not noticed the H. revealiana problem with the Edinburgh source. I probably depended too much on Jepson. I think it would be appropriate to remove the information. It would also be good to add something to the taxonomy section about H. revealiana to provide information to users and make sure no one else trips over this. 🌿MtBotany (talk) 18:59, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, if you want to learn tips and tricks to find information about species to improve articles like this one, reach out. Having more people work on plants would be really excellent. 🌿MtBotany (talk) 19:18, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the quick followup @MtBotany! I found a note in the same paper I linked saying Moran thought that revealiana was stephensii in 1977, so I think the mystery is solved. I'll put a note on that page. Hopefully I can go photograph both of these trees in the wild soon... FlightTerminationSystem (talk) 19:24, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
New/better photographs would be amazing. There are not any research grade photographs at iNaturalist that have one of the creative commons licenses that allows them to be used on Wikipedia. 🌿MtBotany (talk) 22:56, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@MtBotany happy to report that the attempt to find H. revealiana in the wild was a success (although barely - turns out botanists' coordinates from 14 years ago are not necessarily reliable!), I don't have all the photos processed yet but should have a lot of new CC-BY-SA photos on wikimedia shortly. Added one already: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hesperocyparis_revealiana_20241126_1.jpg
Hoping to try and locate stephensonii proper later this month! FlightTerminationSystem (talk) 05:24, 2 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
