A reliable source for that specific edit should be provided.
A well-known source that has a reputation for neutral (not biased) territorial control coverage, can be used (is deemed reliable) for all edits.
A well-known source that does not have a reputation for neutral (not biased) territorial control coverage, can be used (is deemed reliable) only for edits that are unfavorable to the side it prefers (favorable to the side it opposes).
A source that is not well-known (or that has proven inaccurate for all edits) cannot be used (is deemed unreliable) for any edit. This includes all maps (see item 2. next).
Maps from mainstream media are approximate and therefore unreliable for any edit. Maps from amateur sources are below the standards of Wikipedia for any edit. They violate WP:SPS and WP:CIRCULAR.
WP:SPS: "Anyone can create a personal web page, self-publish a book, or claim to be an expert. That is why self-published material, such as books, patents, newsletters, personal websites, open wikis, personal or group blogs, Internet forum postings, and tweets, are largely not acceptable as sources."
WP:CIRCULAR: "Do not use websites that mirror Wikipedia content or publications that rely on material from Wikipedia as sources."
The contentious topics procedure applies to this page. This page is related to the Balkans or Eastern Europe, which has been designated as a contentious topic.

The longitude of Metiolkine in Luhansk is wrong.
{ lat = "48.930", long = "39.550", mark = "Location dot red.svg", marksize = 6, label = "Metiolkine", link = "Territorial control during the Russo-Ukrainian War#Metiolkine", label_size = 50},
It should be changed to:
{ lat = "48.930", long = "38.550", mark = "Location dot red.svg", marksize = 4, label = "Metiolkine", link = "Territorial control during the Russo-Ukrainian War#Metiolkine", label_size = 0}, 帕迪沙 (talk) 09:41, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Shaan Sengupta Could you elaborate on the need to remove the flags to "get collapsible headers for mobile users"? I'm not seeing any noticeable difference in terms of collapsibility between sections with the flags and those without, on both the mobile website and app. Flemmish Nietzsche (talk) 05:18, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Flemmish Nietzsche do you know how can we change text color of Russia? It is not very nicely visible with Red background. What I can do is either lighten the colour or remove the page link and apply style="color:black;"Shaan SenguptaTalk05:33, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I opted for a lighter colour for Russia, let me know what you think. Apparently Wikimedia servers do not like it very much when you try to replace all the flags in one go. Flemmish Nietzsche (talk) 05:49, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The sections seem to be collapsed already; the only ones not set to red or yellow are settlements which are contested/in the "gray zone", which are intentionally not coloured one way. Flemmish Nietzsche (talk) 06:17, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I feel like, primarily on the Russia side, the combo of the links and the color is unnecessary. It is an eyesore to read with the combo of blue text with a red background. In addition, I feel this violates WP:MoS, specifically the portion about duplicate and repeat links. I didn't want to make any changes myself without approval. Thanks!
