Inaccuracy regarding America West Arena

The discussion regarding America West Arena and it's attendance is way out of place. The arena was always at 16,210 capacity for Ice Hockey. They didn't reduce the capacity after the Coyotes moved in and played a few games. It was always obstructed view for hockey.

No need to mention it, twice

Gretzky's name is already in the Team Box, pointing out he's minority-owner & coach. The article doesn't have to mention his name at the top. The other NHL clubs ,don't mention their coach at the top of their articles. PS- I'm not Anti-Gretzky GoodDay 22:05, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

Leaving on a Jet plane

This article on the Coyotes reads almost the same as the article on the Jets. The vast majority of the writing in the article is about the Jets. We need to shorten the info on the Jets and focus this article more on the Coyotes. Masterhatch 15 August 2005

Personally, I'd make two seperate articles, but that doesn't look like the status quo in the NHL articles... ccwaters 14:51, 15 August 2005 (UTC)
Currently there are two separate articles. What looks like happened was someone made a Winnipeg Jets article and just copy pasted the Coyotes page to it. Some teams (such as Calgary Flames/Atlanta Flames) are on the same page, but other teams such as Dallas Stars/Minnesota North Stars/Oakland Seals and New Jersey Devils/Kansas City Scouts/Colorado Rockies (NHL) have separate pages. If i was more ambitious, i would split the Flames up. But i have too many other projects on the go right now. What I am suggesting for this article is to shorten the Jets history on this page and talk more about the Coyotes. If someone has the time or energy, that would be a nifty little project. Masterhatch 15 August 2005
Well, the Dallas Stars article has exactly 2 sentences about the Dallas Stars. Carolina Hurricanes is roughly 50% Whalers even though there is a perfectly acceptable Hartford Whalers article. Atlanta Flames do need their own article. The New Jersey Devils is actually mostly Devils, though. ccwaters 17:05, 15 August 2005 (UTC)
Yes, you are right. There are a lot of pages that need a lot of work. Masterhatch 15 August 2005
It does read like it was written by a disgruntled Jets fan, doesn't it? Are there any Coyotes fans in the house? Or anyone who can accurately summarize the last ten years in a few paragraphs? (This season alone deserves something to itself, given how swimmingly everything has gone.) I think the Colorado Avalanche page does a good job of separating Quebec from Colorado, even if it is horrendously partisan in tone. Doogie2K 18:55, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
Okay, a little better, though now, it needs some real Coyotes history (that middle paragraph is more of a placeholder). Any Coyotes fans in the house, or people with access to a media guide or something? Unless, of course, their website has everything we need... Doogie2K 19:24, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

List of Phoenix Coyotes players

I have just completed the List of Phoenix Coyotes players. It is 100% complete as of the end of the 2003-04 NHL season. It would be a great help to keep it complete if when a new player starts playing for the Coyotes, he could be added to the list! Thanks! Masterhatch 15 August 2005

Inaccuracy regarding Selanne

The article currently states that Selanne was one of the Jets to leave the franchise during the summer the team moved to Phoenix. This is inaccurate, as the Jets had traded Selanne to Anaheim during the 1996 season for, among other players, D Oleg Tverdovsky. Though I cannot find a source to back this, Winnipeg rumour has long held that the management made this move to free up funds to keep American-born Keith Tkachuk and sign American-born free agent Jeremy Roenick, thus making the team more "palatable" to a predominantly American market.

Thomas Steen would perhaps be the best example of a Jet who did not make the move to Phoenix, inasmuch as his whole career was in Winnipeg, and he was much-beloved by the home fans.

Feb 7, 1996: Winnipeg Jets traded Teemu Selanne, Marc Chouinard and 4th round selection (later traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, later traded to the Montreal Canadiens - Kim Staal) in 1996 to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim for Chad Kilger, Oleg Tverdovsky and 3rd round selection (Per-Anton Lundstrom) in 1996. http://tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=1035&hubname=nhl-ducks ccwaters 17:35, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

Rick Tocchet

Is the whole Rick Tocchet gambling ring(another article here) not worth mentioning? For people who didn't know (since I had no idea before reading about it, not sure why it took me so long to find out) he was/is (didn't get fired, on leave of absence) the assistant coach of the Coyotes. I do think it's funny how the New Jersey authorities call it "Operation Slapshot" though. BsroiaadnTalk 05:23, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

Dangerous future

Why do I not see anything about the Coyotes bleeding money? they are expected to lose another 30 million this year, and continue to draw very small crowds. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rddflag (talkcontribs) 17:02, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

Jerry Moyes status

If Moyes is still the 'majority owner' in title only? Wouldn't 'minority owner' Gretzky be in charge of the Coyotes? GoodDay (talk) 13:51, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

I believe the league itself has assumed control for the moment. We'll have a better idea of who's actually operating this team after todays (or was it tomorows?) court appearance regarding the bankruptcy claim. Resolute 14:18, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
Moyes still owns the team but the NHL is controlling it. Sort of like the situation in Anaheim where the owner can't make decisions for the team. -Djsasso (talk) 15:14, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
I've re-added Moyes to the owner section, as he's still the majority owner. Note that the section isn't called active owner. GoodDay (talk) 14:40, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
The Coyotes were purchased by Ice Edge Holdings LLC. and the team will continue to play in Phoenix/Glendale instead. The southern Ontario market is under the Toronto Maple Leafs fan base, while other considerations in the past like Chicago, Kansas City, Hartford and Las Vegas either have a team (Chicago has the Chicago Blackhawks) or lack a standard arena (the Kansas City Sprint Center was opened 3 years ago). + Mike D 26 (talk) 01:19, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
Point of fact: The Coyotes have not yet been purchased by Ice Edge, but rather, the group has signed a letter of intent. They still have to successfully negotiate agreements with the City of Glendale and the National Hockey League, and be ratified by both, before they will take ownership. Resolute 05:49, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
Opinion: keeping the team in the desert is not going to make it more profitable; the failure of this club (the Glendale/Pheonix market is not much of a market at all) is evidence of why moving Canadians team to the US south is a bad idea. We should definitely not overplay the situation with Ice Edge, as it's likely to not turn out with the rosy projections that they seem to be putting forward. 128.138.64.212 (talk) 22:51, 19 January 2010 (UTC)
Ice Edge LLC didn't buy the Coyotes in late 2010. Their objective is to keep the team in the Phoenix metro area. If the team wanted a move to Hamilton, Ontario or Hartford, Connecticut; preferably in a new arena proposed in Fairfield County, Connecticut, it needs to be reported in the article with the citations needed. The new owner of the Coyotes franchise has to repair the financial losses or expect the Coyotes to fold operations after the 2010-11 season ends. Mike D 26 (talk) 22:24, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

Sale

"Glendale made a deal with Matt Hulsizer who will buy the team from the NHL and become the Owner of the Phoenix Coyotes."

No he won't. This doesn't reflect the actuality of the situation at all. Hulsizer and the city of Glendale are currently engaged in a failing deal that will ultimately not end up with him owning the team. Much of the section is flawed. It should say something about the bonds that aren't selling, Goldwater's pending lawsuit and True North's plans to buy and return the team to Winnipeg. The article as it is makes an assumption that will almost certainly be proven wrong. He's trying to buy the team; he's not going to buy the team. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.69.172.148 (talk) 06:14, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

The events you discuss belong more at Phoenix Coyotes bankruptcy article where they can be treated in depth, while this one should ultimately only cover the gory details at a higher level. The existing statement, while poorly constructed is accurate: Glendale, the NHL and Hulsizer have a deal in place that would see him become the team's owner. The bond issue is covered in more detail in the bankruptcy article, while Goldwater's threatened (not impending) lawsuit is also mentioned. It is only speculation that True North has plans to buy and return the team to Winnipeg, so it is not appropriate to make such a statement as if it were fact. Resolute 16:49, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

The reason i put that important thing

Because the Coyotes could transfer to a city before the next NHL season, if nobody buys the team. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.194.235.61 (talk) 02:25, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for your contribution, but I have reverted the addition. While it is possible that the team could yet relocate, that is pure speculation at this point, and Wikipedia does not deal in what might happen. The Coyotes' future is well documented in the Phoenix Coyotes bankruptcy article. Thanks, Resolute 04:55, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

Players' birthplaces

Whose interesting idea was it to put birthplaces in the countries that no longer exist? Czechoslovakia? USSR? I understand the idea, but it still looks somewhat strange. Nomad (talk) 08:41, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

  • It is, in fact, SOP - and always has been - to list birthplaces in biographical articles as being in the countries then in place at the time of birth. This is nothing new. Ravenswing 17:10, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
  • Altering the historical birth place of an individual introduces anachronisms, and consequently, errors. One cannot say that Michal Rozsival, for instance, was born in the Czech Republic because the Czech Republic did not exist when he was born. Resolute 22:47, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
  • From personal experience, passports will have the country as what it was at the time the person was born. So, the country of origin is given as Soviet Union, instead of Ukraine or Russia etc., (or whatever the case may be). Maxim(talk) 23:25, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
Your personal experience in what country? I was born in the USSR and my passport states the birthplace as it is NOW. To avoid confusion. And as far as I know, Ukrainian passports do the same. Nomad (talk) 09:55, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

Bankruptcy split

I propose that we split the text from the bankruptcy into a new article, that can be referenced from both the NHL season page and the Phoenix Coyotes page. ʘ alaney2k ʘ (talk) 14:44, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

  • I don't really think that is necessary to have its own article. This is exactly the sort of information that should be found on the coyotes season page. We even have a section on team season pages for just this sort of information. So basically to sum it up, I would put a summary on this page and then a see also link into the section on the season article which would have the bulk of this information. This is what season pages are for. -DJSasso (talk) 14:50, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
    • It would really dominate the Coyotes' season page. Is that appropriate? ʘ alaney2k ʘ (talk) 15:23, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
      • It probably is a close line. I should say I am not against it being on its own, I am just mostly trying to see if there isn't a better way. But I think this story probably did dominate the season or atleast the off-season for the team so that might be appropriate. I just know we are always looking to try and beef up our season articles with more prose. This might be a good way to accomplish that. -DJSasso (talk) 16:04, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
        • It may be the most important story of the time period that the season covers, but the season is really about the play, no? I agree we need more prose on the NHL team season articles. But, most of those articles are still pretty new, with only a backbone. There will be more added, I'm sure. There is the potential, certainly. ʘ alaney2k ʘ (talk) 22:23, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
  • Split it & leave a brief summary (with link to new article). GoodDay (talk) 15:21, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
  • I'd say split. Even if we wanted to, the amount of history and information would drown the season article as well. Hell, if anyone had the time or desire, they could write a GA/FA from the amount of coverage this received. Resolute 21:07, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
Alright lets give it a split. However, I now challenge you to make it a FA Resolute. ;) haha -DJSasso (talk) 23:09, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

    We need a picture of Redfield Baum. ʘ alaney2k ʘ (talk) 23:58, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
    • Well now, that certainly is an interesting challenge, lol! I think I might take you up on it, though it'll be a slow one... focusing on the Terry Fox FAC right now and referencing our BLPs. But this could be a fun one to bring up! Resolute 00:26, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

Bankruptcy section vs. bankruptcy article

Most of the details in the bankruptcy section should be moved to the larger article Phoenix Coyotes bankruptcy, since it is apparently here to stay (though I'm not up to the editing right now). Doprendek (talk) 20:00, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

This is what is known as summary style. On this page we give a brief description, but the majority of the information is found on the other page. The bankruptcy will for a long time (if not forever) be a major part of the history of this franchise so will always have a place on the main team page. -DJSasso (talk) 20:03, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

Reference problem

The eighth reference in the article, regarding the sale to Jamison, is not a real reference. It appear to just be a headline with no link or further identifying information. I assume this was just a mistake on the part of the editor who added, but it obviously needs to be fixed. Tad Lincoln (talk) 05:30, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

Team Records incongruent with all time team leaders

Why does the team record section exclude the days as Winnipeg Jets but the all time leaders include it? Makes no sense. • Because the NHL recognizes records for a franchise, not a city. Whether you find it insulting or not, the official scoring leader in franchise history remains Dale Hawerchuk. Ravenswing 07:55, 3 July 2013 (UTC)

2009 Bankruptcy information

The last line of the bankruptcy paragraph is in error, I believe.

"The NHL has set a December 31, 2010 deadline for the sale or it will seek to transfer the franchise to another city."

I recall reading somewhere that the NHL wasn't going to outright seek to transfer the franchise, but would be open to deals with buyers who were interested in possibly relocating the team.

If anyone can find a source for that, would it be worth it to change that sentence? (New to wikipedia editing) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Naur3l (talkcontribs) 07:47, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

How is what the National Post (a CANADIAN NEWSPAPER) thinks about a deal that does not concern them in any way shape or form valid in a non-biased article? That's an absolute garbage addition that should be removed immediately. If you want to post some criticism, think Arizona Republic or a local newspaper that has a grasp on what's going on LOCALLY. 72.208.181.15 (talk) 00:52, 11 July 2013 (UTC)Greg

Well because a newspaper that is not local is more likely to be unbiased than a local paper that has to pander to advertisers and business people in the local market etc. But either way its a highly reputable newspaper and that is all we require. -DJSasso (talk) 16:47, 13 July 2013 (UTC)
The NHL is a multi-national league and its business dealings are of interest to numerous locales. That the National Post is not local to Phoenix does not invalidate it as a source. That being said, I fail to see what make's the NP's opinion at one moment in time particularly notable in this case. Resolute 21:44, 13 July 2013 (UTC)

Seems they've unretired Hawerchuk's #10 and Bobby Hull's #9. Talk about an absolute classless move. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.167.35.5 (talk) 23:33, 12 May 2015 (UTC)

That could have been part of the deal with the Atlanta/Winnipeg move as well.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.184.114.91 (talkcontribs)

They've also unretired Thomas Steen's number 25. I have not made an actual change but feel that the unretired numbers 9, 10 and 25 should be reflected in the article and it currently is not noted. If someone knows precisely why they were unretired, it would be good for them to let us know. It seems only players to have actually played for the Coyotes remain retired. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lizmichael (talkcontribs) 23:39, 3 March 2018 (UTC)

"But now Gagner’s getting Hull’s 9, which is part of the Coyotes’ six-man Ring of Honour. They have no retired jerseys, per se, with Shane Doan’s No. 19 for certain when their captain quits. “The No. 9 is one of their honoured numbers,” said Gagner" This from a 2014 article.
The Coyotes 2017–18 media guide has two places where this is pointed out - pages 271–73 and pages 296–97. The first is a list of all players by jersey number and it has the following notes for these numbers in question: "RECOGNIZED in honor of (player), (date)." The second is for the "Ring of Honor". For the 2 Winnipeg-only players who had their number retired while the franchise was still there, it says, "Hull's #9 was originally retired by the Winnipeg Jets on February 19, 1989; his #9 was entered into the Coyotes' Ring of Honor on October 8, 2005". For the Coyotes players (and Hawerchuk) it only has the second part of that.
Since the article about the Coyotes wanting to retire Doan's number in the near future says "retire" and not "honor" or "enter into the Coyotes' Ring of Honor", it would appear 7, 27, and 97 are retired. It's hard to believe that if these numbers were merely honored and not out of circulation that 15 years and counting would pass without someone wearing number 27, and 12 years and counting without someone wearing number 7. Hopefully the Coyotes clarify this. --SP17 (talk) 15:16, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
"Doan will become the first Coyotes player to have his jersey retired at Gila River Arena. Former Coyotes players Keith Tkachuk (7), Jeremy Roenick (97) and Teppo Numminen (27) along with former Winnipeg Jets players Bobby Hull (9), Thomas Steen (25) and Dale Hawerchuk (10) have been inducted into the Coyotes' Ring of Honor."[1] --SP17 (talk) 18:34, 1 August 2018 (UTC)

Source and Add Financial Hardship

I believe, to date, there has not been a single season that the Coyotes have had a positive operating income; seems like an extraordinary fact, I just need to source it. Thoughts on adding to the article? (talk) 14:31, 9 December 2021 (UTC)

Glendale to Tempe

Since this isn't a re-location so to speak. Best we treat it like the New Jersey Devils' move from East Rutherford to Newark. GoodDay (talk) 04:46, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

Will the team be classified as “defunct” or simply a former team?

Once the 2023-24 season is over, will the introduction of this page be either the following:

”The Arizona Coyotes were a professional ice hockey team that was based in the Phoenix metropolitan area.”

or

”The Arizona Coyotes are a defunct professional ice hockey team based in the Phoenix metropolitan area.”

I propose the use of the word “defunct” until June 2024, when it’ll be announced whether Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo has won or lost the land bid to construct a new arena in Phoenix. Should he lose the bid, I propose then changing the word to refer to the Coyotes current state as “was/were”. CanadianOntarian (talk) 02:37, 18 April 2024 (UTC)

Follow how it's done at (for examples) Hartford Whalers, Atlanta Thrashers, Kansas City Scouts etc. GoodDay (talk) 02:40, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
Yes but those teams had no plans of returning. I also argue that the Coyotes are in a unique predicament as there is a chance that Arizona will receive another NHL expansion team in 3-5 years. Alex Meruelo is saving the rights for the terms “Coyotes”. The Coyotes are relocating due to an arena situation, so there is stronger speculation that the team will return in 3-5 years as an expansion team. CanadianOntarian (talk) 02:45, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
According to reports they'll be listed as suspended operations until the new arena situation is resolved. The board vote and announcement should come tomorrow and then we'll proceed. Deadman137 (talk) 02:42, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
Should the Coyotes be considered a suspended team, I’d advocate for the term “defunct” as business operations for the Arizona Coyotes are not permanently shutdown. CanadianOntarian (talk) 02:46, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
The Coyotes won't be returning. The Phoenix area will be getting an expansion team, a totally different franchise. GoodDay (talk) 02:50, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
It’s already been stated that the naming rights for the Coyotes haven’t been sold, and Alex Meruelo, team owner and active bidder for the land bid to construct the arena in Phoenix, is keeping the name. There’s almost a zero percent chance that if or when the Arizona expansion team comes, that it’ll be a different team name than Coyotes. CanadianOntarian (talk) 03:24, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
If the Coyotes do not fold they will come back as an expansion team, similar to what happened with the Cleveland Browns. Deadman137 (talk) 03:35, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
Yup, also what I’m thinking; 1995-96 Cleveland Browns situation CanadianOntarian (talk) 04:28, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
That'll be a first for the NHL then, pretending a new franchise is an old franchise. This is usually done by the NFL & CFL. We'll have to wait & see how to handle this situation. GoodDay (talk) 10:18, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
The NHL just put out their press release confirming the move, and the fact that it is a Browns / Ravens situation (where the Coyotes will temporarily suspend operations, Meruelo will retain the Coyotes name and branding in Arizona, with a chance to "reactivate" the Coyotes in the next 5 years). Fix the typo on the line: The Arizona Coyotes Were a professional

Fix the typo and add the period on paragraph:

You're welcome! Marveloushistorian (talk) 18:51, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
I'm sorry, I'm not seeing where this passage occurs on the Arizona Coyotes page, but I think that it should read as follows:
"The team announced a relocation to Salt Lake City, Utah in the 2023–24 NHL season set for the start of the 2024–25 NHL season. The last game at Mullett Arena was a 5 - 2 win over the Edmonton Oilers."
This splits two different ideas into cohesive sentences. TheDarkEnforcer (talk) 23:15, 18 April 2024 (UTC)

Its official

According to Deseret News, the move has been approved. NW1223<Howl at meMy hunts> 20:08, 18 April 2024 (UTC)

Are the Coyotes re-locating? We're getting news that the franchise is staying put & merely suspending operations. Next season will be an expansion team, in Salt Lake City. GoodDay (talk) 00:45, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
The team and some of its staff are relocating to Utah. The team's record stays in Arizona and will reactivate if a team ever comes back to Arizona. Marveloushistorian (talk) 02:31, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
They have five years to get an arena or the team will fold. Deadman137 (talk) 02:38, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
I don’t think the category of Disestablishment is appropriate as the club is only being suspended not disestablished yet. Gojetsgo55 (talk) 04:05, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
