Disbanded anyway?

In the early stages of the Soviet Operation Bagration of June to August 1944, the 31st Infantry Division was destroyed… [It] was officially disbanded on 18 July 1944.

So even though the division had been destroyed, and no longer existed, it had to be disbanded anyway? Or was there some discussion of a Nazi division being resembled in mid-1944? Also, if there was some need to disband it after it had seized to exist, couldn't they have at least waited another month, until the end of the Soviet campaign? In terms of historical detail, did they really stop to ceremoniously disband the various parts of their forces as they ceased to exist? It seems like they were already pretty busy, stretching out their defeat as long as possible. You know how people hate to be wrong. – AndyFielding (talk) 02:00, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Quite common. As formations were surrounded and captured or destroyed, they still had men who were in hospitals or on leave etc, and the formation was still on the German Army order of battle and needed to be disbanded and the troops reallocated. Later, some formations were re-established with newly conscripted troops. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 02:26, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
