Biography

[edit]

Lidiya Maslova was born on July 9, 1971 in Moscow. Graduate of the Sociology Department of Moscow State University. Since 1995 Junior Fellow at the Research Institute of Cinematography. From 1998 to 2015 - employee of the publishing house Kommersant. Published in the film magazines Iskusstvo Kino, Seans, and Afisha.[2] Author of articles for the encyclopedia The Modern History of Russian Cinema. 1986-2000 (Seance Publishing House, 2004).[3]

In 1997, she received a prize from the Russian Guild of Film Critics. Roman Volobuev repeatedly called Maslova "a favorite film critic and the smartest woman of her generation".[4] Over the years of working at Kommersant, she gained a reputation as one of the toughest and most independent film critics in the country. Andrei Plakhov, Maslova's colleague at Kommersant, pointed out that she is one of those film critics whose reviews are of interest to filmmakers, and noted that her reviews have often provoked a violent reaction from them. According to Plakhov, some directors demanded that the editor-in-chief of the newspaper "almost physically destroy the critic Maslova".[5]
