Kawran Bazar (Bengali: কাওরান বাজার), also referred to as Karwan Bazar,[1][2] is a central business district and is one of the biggest commodity marketplaces in Dhaka city, the capital of Bangladesh.[3] Located in Tejgaon Thana, it is a designated commercial area of the Dhaka North City Corporation.[4] The biggest local Bangladeshi fruits wholesale market is located here. Kawran Bazar is next to Panthapath, a road that has several well-known establishments.
History
[edit]During the Mughal rule, there was a customs check post located near Kawran Bazar. Many traders sold their goods there, before passing through the check point, to avoid paying tax.[5] Markets have existed in the Kawran Bazar area since the 17th century.[5] In the late 18th century, Kawran Singh, a Marwari trader, established a market in the area and the market was named Kawran Bazar after him.[3] By the late 19th century, it became notable as a marketplace for household products such as pottery and crockery.[3]
Marketplace
[edit]Kawran Bazar has one of the largest wholesale marketplaces in Dhaka city. It is also one of the largest marketplaces in South Asia.[citation needed] As of 2024, the Dhaka North City Corporation owns four markets at Kawran Bazar, spread across approximately 24 bighas of land, consisting of 1,789 permanent shops and 180 temporary ones.[6] The wholesale market has a daily revenue of 50 million Bangladeshi taka.[3]
Business district
[edit]Kawran Bazar has emerged as an important business district of Dhaka. The main offices of Prothom Alo,[7] the Daily Star, The Independent, and several other newspapers are located here. Also, the office and studio of television channels Ekushey Television,[8] NTV,[9] ATN Bangla, ATN News, Banglavision and ABC Radio are located at Kawran Bazar. The main campus of Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology was located here. Square Hospital, Bashundhara City mall, BRB Hospital and many pharmacies are located in Panthapath⠀near Kawran Bazar.
Kawran Bazaar also has the headquarters for the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh,[10] along with Export Promotion Bureau, EPB of Bangladesh.
