Jayden Yen Dumont (born February 24, 2006)[2], known professionally as Jaydes (previously known as evvls), is an American rapper, singer, producer, and songwriter from Tamarac, Florida.[3] He is best known for his SoundCloud releases, and has gained popularity in the underground hip-hop scene from social media platforms such as TikTok.[4] He has collaborated with other underground hip-hop artists,[5] including KA$HDAMI, Riovaz, Rich Amiri, Yung Fazo, and acquainted-artist Yuke.[1]

Career

[edit]

2019–2021: Beginnings, evvls

[edit]

Dumont said in an interview that he first started recording music in 2019, claiming he recorded this music in Audacity.[6] In 2020, Jaydes started releasing music to SoundCloud under the name "evvls".[7][8] He started off with his unique Florida-inspired take on the PluggnB genre. This quickly rose him to fame in the underground hip-hop scene in 2021.[9]

2021–2022: Breakthrough, Romanticism

[edit]

By late 2021, Jaydes began to show extreme versatility in his music by being able to capture different musical atmospheres, from up-tempo music like his hit singleslugs” and “scam likely" to more ambient and wavy songs like “vivienne” and “hearts”. With even more of an R&B / indie rock sound with softer vocals that can be seen in his 2022 EP romanticism.[10]

2023–present: Production change, Count Up Dracula & Panic

[edit]

In 2023, Jaydes started making music under the moniker "Mandy".[11] Dumont often collaborated with fellow-artist wifiskeleton.[12] The music was more focused on the Indie Rock and Punk sound he had been experimenting with, with a lot of the songs using instrumentals by Alex G and American Football.[13]

In December 2023, his song "belikeme?" (released under evvls) was listed by The New York Times as one of the best songs of 2023.[14] Jaydes started releasing music under his main profile again in 2024, bringing his experimental sound with him. His production drastically changed to more punk-focused, with his projects Count Up Dracula and Panic, in which he claimed in an interview that he's recorded this material live in-studio.[15][16] These projects were met with negative criticism, due to the muddy and raw overall production.[17] He stated that his favorite artist and idol is GG Allin, an infamous punk-rocker.[18]

As a result of his arrest, he has been removed from his label, 10K Projects.[19]

Personal life

[edit]

Early life

[edit]

Dumont was born on February 24, 2006 to a Haitian father and a Dominican mother and was raised in Pompano Beach, Florida with two older sisters.[20] He grew up with a passion for music, and started producing and writing music at a very young age.[21] Dumont took piano lessons in elementary school, and started producing beats in his early teenage years.[22]

At 16, he stopped attending high school, and switched to online learning in favor of his music, and due to controversies at school.[23][24]

Arrest

[edit]

On November 3, 2024, a warrant for Dumont's arrest was issued by the Broward County Sheriff's Office after a series of screenshots were published by the now-terminated Instagram account @exposingjaydes, allegedly stating that Dumont had stabbed his 17-year-old ex-girlfriend in the neck and arms with scissors and a box cutter when she denied sexual intercourse.[25] A week later, on November 10, 2024, 9-1-1 was called on Dumont at a Denny's in Oakland Park, Florida when he was observed having a mental episode, wielding a knife. He was arrested at 3:28 a.m. local time, and was charged with attempted murder at arrest.[26] He is currently being held with no bond, and his trial is pending.[22][27][28]
