Observe, please, that the indicated gentleman is actually smiling. All known references for battle fatigue indicate that the patient has become dissociated. Dissociated people do not smile as they are not emotionally present.

Further compare http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:WW2_Marine_after_Eniwetok_assault.jpg with this image. This Marine appears dissociated or at least very very very tired.

I submit that as the soldier is wearing a sling and his arm is bandaged, he may have just been given morphine to relieve his pain. Being high on morphine would account for both the creepy smile and the claimed dissociation.

its a real pic
