Description |
This is an advertising banner, written in Cantonese-specific characters, for freshly prepared peanut/sesame snacks. Photographed near Kaiping City, Guangdong Province, China in February 2008. The characters are: 花生糖;芝麻糖;唔食唔知味;越食越好味. (roughly translated: "peanut sweets; sesame sweets; if you don't eat them you won't know the taste; the more you eat the better the taste"). The characters "唔" and "食" are not used in standard Chinese; the other characters are used in both Cantonese and standard Chinese. |

Article | |
Portion used |
The entire banner. This is necessary to show the total use of written Cantonese, showing that written Cantonese has enough status that the vendor does not need consider it worth translating the message into standard Chinese. |
Low resolution? |
Not of sufficient resolution to reprint a similar banner. |
Purpose of use |
The photograph proves that written Cantonese is in use in mainland China, and suggests that it is understood widely enough and regarded favourably enough to be worth using for an advertising banner. |
Replaceable? |
No free replacement exists. Replacing the image with a description of the text would not provide the reader with the same direct evidence of written Cantonese in mainland China. |
Other information |
The copyright on the banner is unknown but is likely to belong to the owner of the snack stand. |
