Purpose of use

Reviewers disagreed over the tone and appropriateness of Charles Vess's illustrations. In order for readers to understand the aesthetic comments and comparisons made by the reviewers, at least one example of the illustrations needs to be present in the article, for the art cannot be conveyed by words alone:

  • Yvonne Zipp writes that Vess's drawings are "reminiscent of the great Arthur Rackham, harking back to the early 20th-century golden age of children's book illustrations".[1]
  • Mary Ann Gwinn praises the illustrations, describing them as "delightful" and inspired by art deco and Edward Gorey.[2]
  • Lucy Hughes-Hallett argues that the volume is "insistently and inappropriately illustrated". Agreeing that the images are indebted to Rackham, she contends that they are "anachronistic" and a "kind of mimsy-whimsy".[3]
