English: Victoria Railways S Mirls/Kitson designed 'E' Class suburban passenger 2-4-2T No.E236 (Munro No.18 of 1893, withdrawn 1953) at the Victoria Railway Museum, North Williamstown, 2 April 2016. One of VR Chief Railway Commissioner Speight's standard types designed jointly by the VR CME S Mirls and British Engineer Edward Jeffreys and Kitson. Speight was ex Midland Railway (UK) and favoured Kitson products. Only the prototype was built by Kitson in 1888, the remaining 70 being built by Australian builders (much to Kitson's chagrin, I'd have thought!): 45 by Phoenix Foundry, Ballarat and 25 by David Munro's Melbourne Works. After electrification displaced them from their suburban duties in Melbourne the 1920's, 20 were sold to South Australian Railways (their 'M' Class) and 24 rebuilt to Class EE 0-6-2T's. The remaining 'E's' were withdrawn by 1929 except for one whch lasted as an unclassified works shunter a while longer.
