Assembly of the three blades, into the hub of the Lakota True North Power wind turbine for the rooftop mounted urban wind turbine project.
The previous turbine was a simple two-bladed unit; the two-bladed units are not very efficient or desirable, but they are often used because they can be easily home-made, and because the blades can be shipped in one long package, both blades from the same piece of lumber, typically a 2 by 4 inch wood piece that's soaked and bent and carved into shape like the old style airplane propellers.
However, the three bladed turbines are much more efficient, but typically must be assembled onsite, and it is important that the blades be carefully measured to be evenly spaced, and held in an even 120 degree spacing while the hub is tightened.
Here, the True North Power group is overseeing the proper alignment and tightening of the blades.
This picture was taken using a Nikon D2h, while standing on top of an HVAC unit similar to the HVAC unit that's being used as a flat surface for the assembly of the blades. The location is the roof of the EyeTap Personal Imaging Lab, located in the heart of downtown Toronto.
