Summary

Nuclear weapons stockpiles estimates of the USA and USSR/Russia, from 1945-2005. Stockpiles exclude warheads awaiting dismantlement (for the USA this is very few; for Russia this is currently quite high). The US is shown in blue, the USSR in red.

1946-2002 data is from Natural Resources Defense Council, 2003-2006 data are from the "Nuclear notebook" series put out by the NRDC in Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists[1][2][3][4][5] archive copy at the Wayback Machine[6] archive copy at the Wayback Machine.

The most recent parts of the data are only probably accurate to the nearest hundred, which is why they waver a bit. Graph by User:Fastfission in Microsoft Excel. Final dataset available at this image's talk page.
