Notes

1. The original image is titled “ca.12century AD” but how old these glyphs actually are is unclear. (1) According to this table, the alphabet has distinct characters for e and ē, and for o and ō, which, in general, is unlikely in an old Indic script, e.g. Grantha, old Tamil, old Malayalam. (2) Glyphs were allegedly taken from taalegari (palmyra leaf) manuscripts, but apparently palm leaf manuscripts have poor durability and perish rapidly: 12c doesn't sound very likely.

2. The Tulu glyphs for bha and ma in the above table are different from the glyphs for bha and ma, respectively, in Michael Everson, Proposal for encoding the Tulu script in the UCS (PDF), like rotated by 90 degrees. These differences may be glyph variants, or possibly one of the two is wrong.

3. Proposal for encoding the Tulu script in the UCS does not have a glyph for ṟa: the character ṟa in the above table looks like the character ḻa in the Proposal; the character ḻa in the above table looks like the obsolete Kannada character ḻa (

). These differences may be glyph variants, or possibly one of the two is wrong.

4. Proposal has only one e character, not distinguishing a long ē and a short ĕ. Similarly, Proposal has only one o character.

5. Except for the above (e, o, bha, ma, ṟa), the two tables of the Tulu Alphabet are essentially the same. The glyphs e, o, bha, ma, and ḻa from Proposal are shown in the margin for reference.
