Summary

Description
English: Built in 1929-1933, this Tudor Revival-style building, located at the corner of Carnegie Avenue and Stokes Boulevard, was designed by Frank Meade to serve as the home of the Cleveland Club, which occupied the building until it folded in 1939. Following the demise of the club, the building was repurposed as a hotel known as the Tudor Arms Hotel, which benefitted from a close proximity to the many concert venues, nightclubs, and theaters along Euclid Avenue at Doan’s Corners, which was, at the time, a thriving and vibrant entertainment district, but has since entirely vanished due to the expansion of the Cleveland Clinic in the 1980s. Between 1960 and 1963, the building was converted into a dormitory for the nearby Case Western Reserve University, which eventually handed the building over to the Job Corps, which remained in the building until 2007. The building is clad in brick with a limestone base, limestone trim, double-hung windows, a rooftop octagonal tower at the northeast corner of the building flanked by four smaller, shorter octagonal towers, all of which feature crenellated parapets, and low-slope roofs enclosed by parapets. Inside, the building features several historic spaces, including a vestibule with terra cotta wall cladding, murals in wall niches, and coffered ceilings, a lobby with wooden paneling and wooden beams on the ceiling, staircases with intact original wrought iron railings, and several ballrooms with vaulted ceilings, featuring a variety of decorative motifs and decorative trim, columns, chandeliers, fireplaces, balconies, wooden paneling, and murals, and wooden floors. The building was renovated between 2007 and 2011 under the direction of City Architecture, restoring the exterior facades and significant interior spaces, while modernizing the building systems and hotel rooms, and reopened in 2011 as a DoubleTree Hotel by Hilton. Today, the building is one of several grand historic former hotels in the University Circle neighborhood of Cleveland, and primarily serves as accommodation for people visiting the nearby campuses of the Cleveland Clinic and Case Western Reserve University.
