Al is het maar voor even, want twee dagen na Parijs blijkt dat hij een positieve dopingtest afgelegde op 20 juli in Morzine. Dat is de dag van zijn bekende monsterontsnapping. Na een inzinking op weg naar La Toussuire de dag voordien, valt de Amerikaan aan met nog 128 kilometer klimwerk voor de boeg. Landis verkleint op heroïsche wijze zijn achterstand op leider Oscar Pereiro tot minder dan een minuut. In de tijdrit op de voorlaatste dag grijpt Landis alsnog het geel. Lang kan hij daar echter niet van genieten want Landis gaat de geschiedenisboeken in als de eerste Tourwinnaar die zijn zege kwijtraakte wegens dopinggebruik. English:
Paris, 23 July 2006. In the 2006 Tour de France, Floyd Landis cycled from a hopeless position to a final victory. Even if only for a short time, because two days after Paris he apparently tested positive in a doping test on 20 July in Morzine. That was the day of his famous monster breakaway. After having suffered a problem the day before in the stage leading to La Toussuire, the American went on the attack with a 128 kilometre ascent still ahead of him. Landis thus heroically narrowed his gap with the leader Oscar Pereiro to less than one minute. Landis clinched the yellow jersey during the time trial on the penultimate day but this success was short-lived, as Floyd Landis has entered the history books as the first Tour de France winner to lose his triumph because of doping. Après avoir été victime d’une défaillance la veille dans l’étape menant à La Toussuire, l’Américain attaque alors que 128 kilomètres d’ascension l’attendent encore. Landis réduit ainsi avec héroïsme à moins d’une minute son retard sur le leader Oscar Pereiro. Lors du contre-la-montre qui est disputé l’avant-dernier jour, Landis s’empare du maillot jaune. Il ne pourra toutefois pas en profiter longtemps, car Floyd Landis entrera dans les livres d’histoire comme le premier vainqueur du Tour de France à être déclassé pour cause de dopage. |
