English: West end of the Abbey Church of St Mary (Tintern Abbey) located on the western (Welsh) bank of the River Wye. The abbey was founded as a Cistertian house in 1131. By 1269 the abbey owned more than 1215 ha of land and rebuilding of the church was commenced. The abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1536, allowed to fall into disrepair sold to private owners. The ruins were purchased by the Crown in 1901 and control passed to Cadw in 1984.
