Text Appearing Before Image: brakes, whistles and gongs.Arc headlight and illuminated signs are mounted on the out-side of the car, while incandescent lamps are used to illuminatethe interior. The roof and ceiling are of the semi-empire type,and the interior finish is mahogany. The cars are painted a throughout New England. One reason for thehigh cost of construction is the fact that therailway was obliged to follow the State high-way the entire distance, and as the highwayalready occupied all of the available space be-tween the bank of the Westfield River and thehill or mountain side opposite, it was necessaryfor the company to construct a right of wayunder the most adverse conditions. Owing to the rule of the State Highway Commission thatthe rails must be 14^ ft. from the center of thehighway, it was necessary to widen the highwayin many places to secure the required clearance.All of this work had to be done on the mountainside of the road, as the commission would notpermit any work on the river side except the Text Appearing After Image: TYPE OF THE HANDSOME CLOSED CARS ADOPTED BY THE WESTERNMASSACHUSETTS STREET RAILWAY COMPANY
