Notes Exeter Exchange was a shopping centre. The church in the centre is en:St Mary-le-Strand and the tower behind it is that of en:St Clement Danes. It is hard to tell from this picture that at that time, as for centuries before and through to the present, the Strand was one of the main arteries of London. Other 19th century pictures show the Strand clogged with horse drawn traffic. The buildings on the left have since been demolished for street widening.
