English: Political map of the Rhineland and Westphalia circa 1789. Cropped from a map from a late 19th century German atlas showing the Holy Roman Empire on the eve of the French Revolution.
Areas in MAGENTA are prince-bishoprics and archbishoprics-electorates such as Liege (Lüttich), Cologne (Köln), Trier, Münster, Speyer, Mainz, Basle; in PURPLE, imperial abbeys such as Stavelot (Stablö) and Essen-Werden: in RED, free imperial cities such as Aachen and Dortmund; in TURQUOISE, Prussian possessions such as Kleve and Mark; in APRICOT, Austrian possessions such as the Austrian Netherlands and the Breisgau. The other colors show other electorates, duchies, principalities and counties of the Holy Roman Empire.
