The ancient Deme of Melite was the location where the wealthiest, the most powerful, and the most famous Athenians had their residences. Men like Mitliades, Cimon, Themistocles, Alcibiades, and even Epicurus were some of the most prominent among them. The plateau of Melite faces Piraeus on one side and the Saronic Gulf, and on the other the Hill of the Muses (Philopappos Hill), the Hill of Pnyx, and even the Acropolis.
