Yleisradio aloitti säännölliset televisiolähetykset 1.1.1958. Vuosi käynnistyi juhlavasti presidentti Urho Kekkosen uudenvuodenpuheen televisioinnilla Pasilan alastudiosta, joka sijaitsi Helsingin radioaseman vanhassa lähetyshallissa. Kameramies kuvaa valkoisessa takissaan. Sotilassoittokuntaa studiossa johti musiikkimajuri Martti Parantainen (oikealla).
