English: The City of New Orleans, Louisiana, a wood engraving published in Harper's Weekly, May 1862.
Artist's "birds eye view" from perspective in the air above the Mississippi River across from Faubourg Ste. Marie area, now old warehouse district, looking back to Lake Pontchartrain. The line of Canal Street is right of center; the block of the US Customs House to the right of its river end. Note sizable area of open ground along the riverfront; in this era used as space for cargo being loaded and unloaded from steamships. Clearly seen are Bayou St. John connecting to Lake Ponchartrain towards the top of the view, with the Carondelet Canal visible; seen but less distinct is the New Basin Canal just left of center.

Public domainPublic domainfalsefalse
This work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 70 years or fewer.
You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States.
