Note how Donny is dressed in the photo I took of him in July 1984 when I
picked him up at Oakland Airport. Together we must have made quite a
sight when we walked through the terminal building to the parking lot. I
was just as outrageously dressed as he was. I was wearing my white, full
dress Royal Grand Fenwick Navy uniform with the light blue pom pom (for
peace) on the white European navy-style hat. I never shared Donny's
enthusiasm for punk music but he shared my Grand Fenwick trip from the
movie "The Mouse That Roared" with Peter Sellers made in 1959. Together
Donny and I were "waging peace" against the United States of America.
We agreed that especially as U.S. military veterans, we felt betrayed by
the country of our birth because of how we were treated while jailed for
civil disobedience.
We had an ongoing debate though about our navy's name. I preferred "Royal
Grand Fenwick Navy." He preferred "Ducal Navy of Grand Fenwick."
Technically I agreed with him since Grand Fenwick was (is) a mere duchy
and not a monarchy. But I felt not only did "royal" have a nicer ring to
it but that we (humans) are all blue bloods and have merely to look at the
veins on our wrists.
