Summary

Description
English: John A. Fihelly, 1920. Born in 1882 in Timoleague, Cork, Ireland, John Fihelly arrived with his family in Australia in 1883. One of the founders of Rugby League in Queensland, he was assistant manager of the first Australian team to visit Britain in 1908-1909. He represented Paddington in the Legislative Assembly from 1912 until 1924, holding several cabinet posts including minister of justice, secretary for railways and minister without portfolio. During World War I his staunch anti-conscription stance lead to the pejoritive term, Fihellysim, signifying disloyalty and support for Germany and the Sinn Fein rebels.
