St Roberts Church, Pannal, North Yorkshire, England. Showing half of the piscina (on the left) and the top of the sedilia (centre) - both in very low positions due to the raising of the floor to allow for ledgers and graves. Note to editors: This is not a swimming pool. A piscina is a shallow basin placed near the altar of a church, or else in the vestry or sacristy, used for washing the communion vessels. The sacrarium is the drain itself. Anglicans usually refer to the basin, calling it a piscina. (See Piscina). |
