Summary

Description
English: St Andrew's church. St Andrew's church > 1399576 is one of those churches which are surrounded by tall trees and are, for that reason, difficult to photograph. The church stands on an ancient place of worship, bordered by a woodland > 1399549 to the east and by the busy Quidenham Road on the other side. Quidenham Hall, presently a Carmelite Monastery, adjoins in the south > 1399539. The church as we see it today dates from the 14th/15th century but the round Saxon tower is much older, dating from between 950 and 1050. The octagonal top was added in the 15th century and the spire added in 1867 and rebuilt in 1930. St Andrews has eight stained glass windows > 1399590 - 1399596 most dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries and making the interior quite dark. The modern east window of the memorial chapel was designed by Reginald Bell and depicts an American airman meeting Jesus > 1399586. This was the first commemorative window of its kind in England and the chapel is dedicated to the memory of the US airmen of the 96th Bomb Group who were stationed at nearby Snetterton and who lost their lives in WWII.
