Summary
DescriptionSt. Nicholas Church North Walsham tomb.jpg |
English: Ornate momument with semi-recumbent effigy of Sir William Paston (1528-1610), St Nicholas Church, North Walsham, Norfolk. Erected by him in 1608 in anticipation of his death. Latin inscription translated as: "Sacred to Piety and Beneficence. Here rests the Lord William Paston, an illustrious Knight sprung from an ancient and noble stock, most noble in his descent and family connections, famed for a hospitality of fifty-five years standing, which is to continue twenty years after his death, munificent in repairing the cathedral churches of Bath and Norwich, and Gonville and Caius College; a benefactor to the poor of the town of Yarmouth, who has piously founded by perpetual endowment a school in this place for the instruction of youth and the propagation of the Word of God: and he, mindful of his mortality, has set up in his lifetime, in the year of the Lord, 1608, this monument, in the sure hope of rising again in Christ"[1]. Heraldic panel above, 18 shields in border, clockwise from top left (Source: Heraldic Visitation of Norfolk (Rye, W., ed. (1891). The Visitacion of Norffolk, made and taken by William Harvey, Clarencieux King of Arms, Anno 1563, enlarged with another Visitacion made by Clarenceux Cooke, with many other descents; as also the Visitation made by John Raven, Richmond, Anno 1613), pedigree of Paston, p.214[2]):
