Summary

Description
English: The Space Shuttle Endeavour's hatch, which crew use to enter and leave the space shuttle. Yes, they use stairs (or, when the shuttle is standing on its tail at lunch, a gantry) to enter the space shuttle.

Note that the hatch is only used when the astronauts enter and exit the shuttle before takeoff and after landing. It is not protected with an airlock, so astronauts performing extravehicular activity (EVA) exit and enter the shuttle in their spacesuits through an airlock that leads into the cargo bay. Obviously, the cargo bay doors must be open for the astronaut to leave the shuttle.

This photo of the Space Shuttle Endeavour was taken at the California Science Center, the "retirement home" (if you will) of this particular shuttle. If you live in the area, go check it out; entrance is only $2!
