Summary

Description
English: The National Soldiers Home in Wood, Wisconsin (later subsumed by Milwaukee), was designed by E. Townsend Mix and built in 1867-68 at a cost of $200,000. Its construction was based on an 1866 law that called for building homes for Civil War veterans. It provided space for nearly 1,000 vets plus a dining hall and administrative offices. It is surrounded by scenic grounds that were one of Milwaukee’s first parks.
