Summary

Description
English: The placement of the motif of the Buddha in the middle of this textile clearly connects Sinxay with Buddhism. This textile was woven over fifty years ago and is the only known textile in Laos that is entirely about Sinxay. The woman who sold it said it was given to her by her mother-in-law, as part of her dowry when she married the woman's youngest son. Her mother-in-law told her it was prized because of the complexity of it’s weaving and creativity in showing images not normally seen as motifs in traditional Thai Daeng textiles. In this area of Laos a majority of the population are non-Buddhist, so the appearance of a textile with a distinct Buddhist emphasis is hard to understand. As far as we know this is the only textile that has been woven to honor the story of Sinxay in Laos and with its complex design motif and intricate supplementary weft technique, indeed this textile could only have been woven in Laos.
