DescriptionScanning electron image of handmade silk paper - 100x.jpg
English: Most papers are made from a plant material so they are cellulose-based. Silk is a protein-based material so it looks and behaves a bit differently when made into paper. Viewing it in the S.E.M. the fibers look like pieces of string cheese and are pulled apart during the beating (maceration) part of the paper-making process. This image was created in 2007 by Charles Kaziek as part of the science and art fusion collaborative called the Paper Project. Image magnification - 100X
