Summary

Description The cargo ship SS Empire State Mariner, circa 1954. The ship was deilvered in 24 February 1954 and three voyages for the U.S. Military Sea Transportation Service (MSTS) before lay being laid up on 9 November 1954. It was acquired by the U.S. Navy on 10 September 1956 and converted to the auxiliary USS Observation Island (E-AG-154). The ship was commissioned in December 1958 and used in the "Polaris" missile program. It was decommissioned in 1972 but in 1977 again converted to a Range Instrumentation Ship for the Military Sealift Command (MSC) as USNS Observation Island (T-AGM-23). It was finally deactivated on 25 March 2014.
