Summary

Description
English: Lt. Col. Powhatan Bolling Whittle, commanding officer, 38th Virginia Infantry. Of Lt. Col. Whittle's role during Pickett's Charge, General James Longstreet noted: "Colonel Whittle of Armistead's brigade, who had been shot through the right leg at Williamsburg and lost his left arm at Malvern Hill, was shot through the right arm, then brought down by a shot through his left leg." Following the Civil War, Whittle returned to his home in Valdosta, Georgia. He later practiced law, was judge of the corporation court of Macon, Georgia, and served several terms in the Georgia legislature. Whittle was born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, and named for his ancestor, the Indian chief Powhatan, from whose daughter Pocahontas Whittle descended.
