English: This photograph from a book published in 1899 is entitled "Pastoral scene at Winfield, on the road from Long Island City to Flushing." In that year Winfield was a neighborhood in eastern Woodside. Between 1854, when it was founded, and 1898 it was sometimes joined with Woodside as "Woodside-Winfield" and sometimes considered to be a separate neighborhood. The place known as "suicide's paradise" lay on the border between the two villages. The photo shows that Woodside retained some portion of its rural character even at the end of the 19th century.
