DescriptionPaeonia ludlowii foliage canopy viewed from beneath.jpg
English: The foliage canopy of a mature specimen of Paeonia ludlowii viewed from beneath, during its flowering period in late Spring. Note venation of large, elegantly-shaped leaves (here revealed by back-lighting) with long petioles, also previous season’s brown stems giving rise to current season’s green, flowering shoots above large bud scales. Also visible: a few flowers (revealing yellow petals, bowl-like sepals and elongate bracts) and some evidence of poor pruning in the past, in the form of ‘dead legs’ i.e. short lengths of dead stem arising from gardener’s failure to prune to a leaf node.
Cultivated plant growing in private front garden of house in London suburb of West Ealing, U.K.
